I know for a fact that I was only paying for my mortgage, so either they have made a mistake by saying that I had PPI or it was also included with the mortgage payment

If it was with the mortgage payment then it would have appeared on the mortgage statements. Not hidden.

It could also be that you initially applied for it and then it was cancelled (cancellation rights or it was an error and stopped before payment). Also, Nationwide did a number of offers where they gave you free MPPI for a year and then after 1 year, they wrote to you saying that you could either keep it at £x pm or cancel it. If you cancelled it you never paid anything. However, on paper you would have had it (and you dont get a refund of the free period as nothing paid means nothing refunded).

Regards the letter from the nationwide, it states the following Thank you for your query as to whether you have held a payment protection plan policy with the nationwide, I have checked our records and can confirm policies were held for the following products, Mortgage, held, credit card, not held. If you now decide that you want to make a complaint for miss-selling of PPI, full details are on our web site.

So if you believe the PPI with your mortgage was mis-sold to you, make a complaint about it. Be careful with your reasons why it was mis-sold and be prepared to provide evidence to support your allegations, if this is asked for.

Hi All, Just a update. After writing to the nationwide complaining about mis-sold PPI, I have finally got a reply plus answers to my questions regarding that i didnt know that i had ppi and i certainly was not paying for ppi from my bank account.

The letter that i got back was to say that they cannot agree that ppi was not mis sold to me and the letter goes into detail regarding my application for my mortgage and the selling of ppi.

    The letter states the following

1, That i requested that ppi to be added to my account
    2. i was given information to take away to read regarding ppi
    3. i had chosen ppi for unemployment only. it states ( By choosing to protect your mortgage repayments with the ppi policy, you removed the chances of having to rely on any employee benefits if you became unemployed as the ppi p;olicy would have paid out in addition to any other benefits you may have received subject to a successful claim.

    4. the sale was conducted on a non advised basis.
    5. because i had decided on unemployment cover only and not sickness or accident cover would indicate that you choose the cover that best suited you at the time
    6. The mortgage offer confirmed that the policy would stat on the same day and it "also confirmed that the first 12 months would be FREE" and that you would be notified shortly before the end of the free period expired of your monthly premium and that i could cancel the policy within the first 12 months at no cost to me.

    7. In October 2004, You phoned the nationwide to cancel the PPI Thus confirming at this time that you were aware that you had PPI and that it could be cancelled, Our records show that your PPI commenced August 2003 and was cancelled October 2004 as requested.

So basically I must have forgotten that i had ppi free for 12 months and at the time i had the commonsense to cancel the policy.

I must have made 3 payments in total Aug Sept Oct 2004, But its not worth doing anything more about it now because the letter shows that i did know what i was signing up to at the time and over time, I have forgotten about it, specially when i paid the mortgage of 3 years early.

all in all, I am happy that i got the answers to my questions and i can forget about it now.

In 2004 there would have been a nine month wait for any State assistance in the event of unemployment. By that time possession proceedings against you would probably have started and put you into an irretrievable situation.

It seems that you got away with cancelling the policy but in view of the possible consequences, the sense in doing so does seem questionable.

Everyone says that until they are made redundant.

So, for the moment, is BHS.

That is the point about insurance - it guards against the possible not the probable or, as I fear is the case for BHS, certain.
