Okay, my apologies if this is in the wrong section, but i had no idea where i could put it. anyways, im planning on a big change in my life very soon, and finally moving out of my family home, and going it alone. i was just hoping for some advice/info from people on places i was thinking about moving to. and getting myself my first ever flat. the places i can afford(that fit my budget, rent wise) and the places that are currently available to rent are as followed..bradford--blackburn--blackpool--washington--huddersfield--dewsbury--bootle--barnsley--stoke--worksop--darwen, if anyone lives in any of these places. or has family who live in these places. or knows anything about these places. id really appreciate some information on them. I.e (employment..nightlife..etc..)

I'm intrigued at the geographical spread chosen.
Why not add in Gateshead, Pontefract, Oldham and Wigan?
Where do you work?
What sort of night life?0 -
I'd sort out a job before moving somewhere personallyTrying to lose weight (13.5lb to go)0

Slightly odd list but I would suggest somewhere commutable to either Manchester or Leeds for both jobs and cracking choice of nightlife.0

Worksop and most other towns along the North East Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border are relatively cheap compared with elsewhere. We moved to a market town in Derbyshire for precisely this reason having come from Sheffield.
Worksop is a funny place, it's old fashioned in the sense of things still feel as if time was back in the 70's, which for me is a nice thing. It certainly had a good nightlife many decades ago but I couldn't comment on that side of it today. It's easily commutable to all major cities and towns in the area. There has been recent developments around the town with EU money etc and businesses are beginning to return.
The net you've cast is very wide, it might be better to consider what type of work you would be looking for and see where you would be most likely to get that type of work iyswim.

Having lived for several years in Blackpool and on the Fylde coast, I would say avoid it. Most work is seasonal, and winter work very difficult to find. The town closes down in winter. Try somewhere inland. M2m.Frugal Living Challenge 2026.

Huddersfield is on the train line between these two cities. People i know who live there seem to like it.
I don't know anyone from Stoke who doesn't hate it!0 -
I'd say Huddersfield from a geographical point of view as a lot of the places seem quite "cut off" in terms of easy transport.0

given the violent crime rate/unemployment i would rule out many of those places..
I'd do as others suggested.. job first, move according to that with no ties you could move again whenever you wantedLB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I live in Huddersfield, and it's good for transport links. The north side of town is pretty easy to get to M62, but house prices are higher to reflect this. The south side of town will add a minimum of 30-45 minutes to get across town. House prices are mostly cheaper.
There are many regular train services, direct to Leeds and Manchester, and onward services to London.
Huddersfield is a university town, so nightlife is mostly targeted at that age group. There are lots of restaurants, but it's mostly run of the mill. There is a Wetherspoons, which will always dish out cheap beer and overcooked breakfasts to the local AA regulars.
I think you need to decide what jobs you're after before deciding where to live. Huddersfield is a great, central place that is well connected. But if you don't need to be in Leeds or Manchester, or anywhere along the M62 corridor, it's a bit pointless.0 -
just been doing a bit of googling as i'm not that knowledgeable about northern cities but an interesting link http://www.centreforcities.org/puas/0
