I have a microsoft windows 8 travelmate b113 acer and keep getting the message computer low on memory. I checked the memory and its at 93% 4.0 GB DDR 3 3.5/3.9, in use 1.4GB avail 429MB, installed physical memory 4.0gb.

Can any one help me to get this laptop working faster?

  • Go to control panel/system/advanced system settings/advanced/performance/advanced and check in virtual memory and see what's there and let us know.

  • Do you properly reboot it at least once a day? Not just sleep, I mean a full restart.
    That clears out the RAM.

Checking that the Virtual Memory setting is correct is a good idea as pointed out above.

What do you use the laptop for? What do you tend to have open when you see the error message?

12288mb is total packing file drives for all files

I dont restart it much, maybe once a week but I can start to restart it eachday though. I just use it for internet and just some word documents etc. Nothing that much. Normally when I get that message about not enough memory is when I have a few webpages open is all.
  • Is the box for 'Automatically manage paging file for all drives' ticked? If not it's best for windows to manage the virtual memory so tick it.

I would scan for malware before messing about with anything else ..

    Almost always the culprit

My old vista laptops grind to a halt almost after a lot of browsing. Running Superantispy clears hundreds of cookies on my laptop and it then runs much better.

I can not find a 'Automatically manage paging file for all drives' box anywhere? Where would it be exactly?

I've run super anti-spyware but dont make much difference. FOr instance when I use google maps the laptop is so slow it doesn't even work. I thought this would be fast laptop but its soooo slow and wish there was something I could do to make it faster.

when you get to this point, click the Change box and the Auto... tickbox will be seen (along with the other options) :)

p.s. I've just had to rebuild a w8.1 lappy for someone who got infected and part of the infection was to disable the pagefile  the infection must've edited/deleted a registry key, couldn't find it so what with that and the other file corruptions caused the only thing to do was rebuild

  • You could run Malwarebytes free http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/ It's best to do it in safemode. If the problem remains you could run sfc to see if any system filles are corrupt. If still no go back up your data and do as suggested do a reinstall.

For slow Google Maps you might want to look at your Browser settings. For Chrome and Firefox look in browser option/advanced for "Use Hardware Acceleration" - and set it to OFF (yes, OFF). On some older PCs using hardware aceleration dramatically slows Google Maps. Worked for me.
