Throwing food away

Okay so here we don't quite get the elaborate packaging as the US does (once had a foil swan made that wrapped the leftovers, bit diff from a doggy bag!) to carry it out inconspiculously, but hey if you enjoyed the meal and paid handsomely for it...........why not take the rest home

I wonder what life will be like with a picky toddler. I'm guessing the dog will get bigger and bigger...
Although I allowed his hatred of chips when he was younger!
One thing he's decided he doesn't like over the last year or so has been mushrooms, but they are fine on pizza and in spaghetti bolognaise  So I got him to help me make a shepherds pie the other week, in the end he took overAs he was chopping the mushrooms, I asked him if he'd actually ever tried one raw as they are a different taste and texture.........straight away he tried one and agreed they were okay, and that it must be when they are fried and mushy..................give me time, I'll have him eating them anyway soon

I throw loads out from the fridge on a Saturday, when I bring the fresh shopping in! It disgusts me & disgusts DH more!
I always have salad & bits left over, from where I have bought too much.
I am really trying to learn to judge better & cut down on this.
Leftovers........If its meat I keep it for sandwiches, but veg or pots I used to keep, but I never used, so now I just chuck them. Veg & pots are cheap anyway, but I wouldn't throw meay away.
I would never keep leftover that had been on someones plate though!!!! Don't you have salt'n'pepper & sauces & bits on the food????!!!!!
I admire people who make good use of leftovers, but not from the plates, that people had been eating from, urgh!0 -
The ONLY food I throw out is a maximum of half a loaf every 7-10 days. And I am thinking about making bread/butter puddings with these soon... not had one of those for years! The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 10

Whoops! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
A freudian typo ! Should have been third generation:o
What prompted my question was that last night we had new potatoes, (amongst other things) and I just couldn't eat mine. They had been on my plate, but no gravy or anything on them, so I put them in a bowl the fridge, also some left over broccoli. DH made himself a broccoli and mayonnaise sandwich at lunchtime, and I heated the potatoes with butter, broccoli and black pepper.
I'm sorry if I sounded judgmental, it was not intended. I was thinking more about that one third of food that we buy being thrown away, and my questions were a genuine attempt to find out how and why this happens, rather than to judge. I have a dear friend who is rapidly approaching 20 stone, and when we shop together she throws food in her basket as if she hates it, and never looks at prices. At home, she opens her fridge, takes stuff out, looks at it briefly, then chucks it in the bin, and I don't dare ask her what is wrong with it, because this woman has serious food and money issues (often complaining they can't afford to live in that house, it's too expensive to run) She would never eat old broccoli and potatoes ! I wonder if she looks down on me for buying reduced price items and my fruit and veg in the market. I suppose I was asking questions I don't dare ask her. It's funny, because I know all about her sex life, but the food and money thing seems far more personal and I simply don't feel I can go there, so I posted the question here instead. All Art is the transfiguration of the commonplace

I breadcrumb leftover bread and add all the grated ends of cheese, this makes a yummy topping on fish pie, shep pie etc.
Ans as for leftovers, I'm the one who makes chicken soup from other peoples left over KFC!!!

Unfortunately though, half the time I forget it's there and when I find it I can't remember how long ago it went in there so it has to go anyway! Also, my husband doesn't like leftovers so it's down to me to either eat it myself or use it in a way he doesn't realise what he's getting. So I'm just trying to gauge portions better so that I don't serve more than we need in the first place. I really hate waste, it upsets me to see things being thrown out.
I disguise it I don't serve up the veg straight again but turn it into a curry, soup, pie, etc When I realise that I have leftovers they don't just get left in the fridge - I plan exactly what I will make with them. Having a good collection of recipes helps. Left over bread goes into breadcrumbs sometimes but most often I make bread pudding:o I have seen grown men weep at the site of home made bread pudding.
Hey I am so careful of the food in my kitchen that I have even been known to make Shirley Goodes Pauper's pottage which is a soup made from veg peelings - scrubbed up of course.I can remember being very shocked that a friend went out and bought celery especially to make soup - I made it when it was past its best. I used to be known as queen of the soups:rotfl:

Why not bread crumb it and freeze it. handy for making stuffing etc.
I don't buy meat to stuff it with stuffing, although I suppose I could make stuffing balls.
Not sure how to breadcrumb bread... or if that bread would go funny like that. It is long-life bread. I buy it as it's about 55-70p/loaf and lasts a whole 10 days, which for me seems the cheapest/best way to buy bread.0 -
I dont tend to dish up more then what is going to be eated, so no need to scrape it back off the plates. I will though make more then will be served up. Todays dinner for example:
I made too much mashed carrots and swede but have saved them for tomorrows dinner.
Batter mix for yorkshire puddings was a little too much, so have saved the batter mix and put it into the fridge. Will make pankcakes with it for breakfast in the morn,.
The chicken I have stretched to serve 5 people for roast dinner today, enough saved to make a chicken pie for dinner and chicken sandwiches for lunch tomorrow. Pulled off the last little bits and fed them to the cat for her dinner, saved me giving her cat food today, which has saved a little money. Then I will use the carcass to make stock.
