Tesco CC V Nationwide CC

I have both these cards, at the moment I do all my spending on the Tesco one and pay of when due in full, I do this to get Tesco points.
would I be better off using the Nationwide one? I understand they do cashback or something.

    If you have the correct Nationwide cashback card at meet the requirements, it is likely to be better. It gives a flat rate of 0.5% cashback that you can spend anywhere, and is a much better card for using overseas. I recently cancelled my Tesco card in favour of opening a Nationwide one.

    The Tesco card gives one Clubcard point per £8 spent. A Clubcard point is worth 1p at worst, 4p at best. This gives a rate of between 0.125 and 0.5 %. Personally, I value Clubcard points at around 2p each, giving a cashback rate of 0.25%. This is because many of the merchants that give the higher redemption rates are either overpriced, run promotions that you can't use Clubcard vouchers with, or both.

    1 for every £4 in Tesco, but it's still 1 point for £7.99 spent.
    A Clubcard point is worth 1p at worst,... 0.125
    At worst it's 1 point for £15.99, i.e. 0.0625%

    That's the one, 0.5% back on Sterling purchases, no forex fees when used abroad and paying in a foreign currency.

    Personally, I would (and do) keep both - but I don't use either on a daily basis. I use the Tesco card as a clubcard only, it being especially valuable when purchasing fuel (as it gets you 1 point/£1, whether you pay with it or not, vs 2/£1 using a normal CC), and I use the Select card abroad, for the obvious reasons.

    There's better cards for use in the UK, but what they are depends on what you spend and where. If they're your only 2x cards, I'd recommend keeping both, but the Nationwide card will probably give you a better return overall.

    What would be a better card to get, I spend £600 - £800 a month and pay it all off.
  • The return depends on where you spend it and how much each transaction is, for the Tesco card. To simplify it:

    If you spend £800 in one go:
    Tesco - 100 Clubcard points = £1 in Tesco, £2-£4 as "deals";
    Nationwide - £4 cashback.

    If you spend £800 as a series of transactions all less than £8, with Tesco you'd get nothing. For simplicity, go with Nationwide!

    If you're spending £600 to £800 per month on credit cards, I'd consider an Amex Platinum Cashback and a Nationwide Select, assuming that a reasonable number of places you spend at accept Amex. The Amex will give you a flat rate of 1.25% cashback for a £25 annual fee, so you'd need to spend over £300 per month on the Amex to be worth doing. The Nationwide card is to use where Amex isn't accepeted.

    There are a few other perks to having both - Amex and Nationwide both offer rewards, which can net you the odd bit of cashback here and there. Also you get a bonus rate of 5% for the first three months on Amex, plus an enhanced rate on your card anniversary. The Amex also gives some free insurance on purchases in case of loss, theft or damage soon after purchase.
  • I agree that AMEX should be in your sights for better cashback rates and incentives. I have also gained by some great offers on the app when then have bonus one offs when you can get credits direct to the cashback card account on promotional offers with retailers.
