Have you tried full fat Greek yogurt with fruit? I eat this most days and it keeps me full until lunch time (not that I'm pregnant!). Usually have blueberries or cherries, frozen, defrosted in the microwave.

    I hate most 'breakfast' things.

So I eat whatever I fancy whether it's breakfast food or not.

Lately I've been enjoying pitta or flour tortilla with either hummus, falafel and salad or chicken and salad.

what is your reading on getting up?? before you eat?? if that is high (over 10 it should be under 5) it is likely not breakfast that is the issue

This is a good point, I don't know much about GD but my husband has Type 1 diabetes, and his readings are often a bit higher in the morning, something to do with the body processing food overnight or something. I'm not sure what your readings are vs what they should be, I suppose if even general carbs from no or low sugar cereals are pushing you over it's about finding very low carb or no carb breakfasts.

Perhaps try eggs a different way (poached or baked) as it will have a very different texture than when scrambled or in an omelette. You can bake them in muffin tins or little ramekins with vegetables and fish bacon. You could try mackerel or kippers, nuts, plain, sugar free yoghurt, go full continental and have meats and cheeses, you could even try a protein shake? Watch out for some brands that have carbs as well though.

  • More ideas to try - thank you!

My fasting reading when I get up is usually around 4.5-5, so I don't think there is any problem there. (I was told it should be below 5.5). I was told it should be below 7.8 1hr after finishing my meal.

A 30g portion of 'healthier' cereals, including porridge, is giving me readings in the region of 8-9. 2 slices of granary toast give me a similar reading.

I have seen a dietician, but it was 30 minutes of instructions in a group with about 15 other women, so it really just covered the basic do's and don'ts. The handout wasn't very helpful either, as it gives instructions that have turned out to be irrelevant to diabetes - eg low fat and salt, which distract rather than help. It also says to include around 1/3 low GI carbs in every meal, and 3-4 portions of fruit a day. The list of high/low GI foods isn't very comprehensive either and online lists seem to contradict each other.

I might try going continental, but there is definitely no way eggs are going to work! My worry is that I have quite a lot of meats and cheeses in my other meals through the day, and I'm going to start having problems with the other meals if I have similar things for breakfast too.

I haven't had GD but you mentioned you eat granary toast -

how about mashed banana on toast
    or baked beans on toast
or cheese and sliced tomato on toast ?

ETA - If you can still manage mushrooms how about those large mushrooms (are they called breakfast mushrooms?) stuffed with goats cheese and walnuts ?

Or make a nice filling sandwich rather than making toast.

Roast chicken and salad, ham and Swiss cheese etc. Have some veg crudites on the side.

Would rather have that all day long than cereal, yuck.

I make slimming world mini quiches and freeze when I am trying to cut down on carbs. I has GD but gave birth prior to appt with dietician but was told to eat carbs with protein and not on their own by midwife

I gave birth to a 7lb 5oz baby at a smidge under 35weeks, my wasters broke unexpectedly. The midwife said DS born early as so big and I am small was nowhere left to grow

bananas are around 1g carbs per cm.. so that would knock carb intake up a lot!

What about nuts as a protein source?
