Yes, I have a BM meter.

I had a growth scan a few days ago, and baby is above the 97th percentile, the consultants have told me a big baby is the primary concern for me in terms of controlling the GD. I am actually 35 weeks, but have an induction booked for 39 weeks. Baby gained 2lb in the last 4 weeks, 3 of which I've been monitoring and more or less within the readings they wanted throughout (apart from my breakfast cereal experiments!)

I have tried all the 'healthier' cereals I can think of - Weetabix is one of my favourites, but two put me over and it's hardly worth having one! I have also tried porridge, bran flakes and all bran in small portions. What I really want to do is pinch some of my sons weetos!

I have finished work now, but I still have to do the school run in the morning, so I don't have a lot of time on my hands to cook or go for a walk (school is too far to walk). I don't think I can face soup or salad at 8am, but maybe I'll have to be a bit more inventive!
Just forget the carbs now, its only a few weeks to go. You will always have to be careful with them - even after your baby is born - so its best to minimise your intake if you're not an insulin user.

A couple of questions: are you not under a consultant with a specialist knowldege of gestational diabetes? And out of interest, were you ever offered insulin? (Although I would agree its a little late to initiate now).

I hope all goes well with the birth, that the baby is born healthy and your condition reverses itself.

  • Cheese and pickle sandwich for breakfast today - strange but successful!

I have seen a specialist consultant a couple of times, but he wasn't very helpful. He is very foreign which makes it difficult to have a meaningful conversation with him, and he was mostly concerned that my breakfast experiments had given some readings out of the goal range - although quite how people are meant to learn without a few mistakes is beyond me!

I was diagnosed late, having 'passed' my first GTT, and being sent for another at 31 weeks due to the size of baby. I have not been offered insulin (which IMO would be overkill), but metformin was suggested this week. Having discussed the side effects and considering that I am just over a tummy bug, the consultant agreed it was not the best time to do it. As my induction is now booked he is happy for me to carry on with diet control until then. Thank goodness, as I have heard some horror stories about the side effects of metformin!

  • People get a bit weird about breakfast and you can only have particular things - cereal, toast or a cooked breakfast etc. I find it all rather odd!

Glad you managed something that didn't make you feel ill.

  • My youngest DD used to go off to school most days with a breakfast of pasta, tomato sauce and grated cheese in her tum, on the argument that when you think about it it's only a variant on cereal, fruit and dairy.....won me over and meant she had 'real' food to work on and not sugar filled confectionery!

My sister had GD with all of her pregnancies and she found that she was always high after breakfast, it didn't matter what she ate. With her last one she was told to follow low GI foods and I found this website which has a lot of information and some recipes. Hope it helps and good luck over the next few weeks.

  • How about porridge with some peanut butter mixed in and a little fruit? I'm not sure how much sugar you can take, you could try half a teaspoon of jam or honey and see what that does (it might well be less than some of the more sugary cereals). Or you could try the scots way and have it with butter and salt! Surprisingly yummy :)

Poached eggs on toast/english muffins, or an omelette with some veggies and a bit of cheese could work well.

Further thought on peanut butter with porridge - I presume OP could use other nut butters too? eg almond butter or cashew butter?

thanks, there are a couple of ideas to work with there. Anything with eggs is off the menu at the moment, I have tried omelette and scrambled eggs the last couple of days and I found it really unpleasant.

Porridge is also out - I tried a tiny portion made with milk and a little artificial sweetener, but this put me way over my target.

I am tolerating fruit quite well, but I am usually starving within half an hour of eating it, so it doesn't really do much for me in terms of meals.

Maybe porridge made with other milks? Almond milk perhaps. Rice milk (I dislike most brands - but Rice Dream brand is fine). Maybe coconut milk?

  • If carbs as a whole are the problem - there are lots of paleo eating pins on Pinterest.
