Virgin up to 100 meg

Ok at the mo I have broadband with Virgin and have up to 100meg? It's a 100 anyway.
I have installed a speed checker on my phone and we are only getting 28!
It was higher before. When I spoke to them before about it they said well it's 'up to' do you have thick walls? No I live in a 1960 semi, no thick walls round here.
Thing is they are now saying I can have up to 150 if I get a new router, have to pay p and p of £5.95, my 16 wants me to go for it as he says his Netflix keeps buffering.

Do you think I should ring up and complain about it before I try the new router? I was going to switch, but Virgin told me as we have high use, Sky etc would be no good, it wouldn't be fast enough, only get 50 with Sky in our area. But if we are only getting 28, wondering if I should switch?

You need to run a speedtest on a computer with it connected to the router via Ethernet cable to get a true reading of the speed being delivered to the router. Wireless is not ideal.

As above. 100Mbps if you can get it is fast enough for any current video service. In fact fast enough for several different streams at the same time. If there is buffering then it is more likely to be through using WiFi than the base speed of the connection.

Come to that 28Mbps should be fast enough too....

Aye never test speeds of your internet connection with a wireless device, it'll show the speed of your wireless connection not the internet connection.

For example I get anything from 10mb/s to 40mb/s if I use a wireless device, from a wired computer with gigabit networking I get 150mb/s or more

Putting an app on your phone does nothing but eat the speed of your wifi.

What phone is it? Is it capable of wifi speeds up to 100mb? Are you accessing via 2g or 5g?

I have my desktop connected via my cable to my VM superhub. I get a solid 100mb connection.

My laptop isn't 5g compatible and gets around 30mb.

My phone however is 5G compatible and I can usually get the full 100mb doing a speed yet over wifi on my phone. My old phone however could never get more than 40mb.

There are so many factors that influence wifi that unless you've got a laptop/PC connected via a cable to the superhub you won't get a true picture of what your speed is.

You will never achieve 100 meg over wifi on a current virgin router
You may be lucky with a bit of fiddling with the router or turning every interference device off to get 35 meg

If you want 100 meg then you will have to link as much as you can by Ethernet cable

As above, you will get fastest speeds in home network if you use an ethernet cable, these are pretty cheap, I picked up a 10M cable for less than a tenner.

Good tip (if you have been with Virgin a long time) is to contact BT, go with their deal, and wait for Virgin Media retentions dept to phone you up.

I done the above and got bill cut from 44 quid to 18 quid a month.

This includes home phone and from 100 to the 200mb broadband.
