  • As dear old Percy Thrower used to say "I think the answer lies in the soil" prepare your beds to support the plants you intend to grow, last year was dire for most gardeners so don't worry too much about that, outdoor variety tomatoes would be the best route for you I think, invest in a few metres of garden fleece and cover them at night, the yield won't be as high as greenhouse grown but planting an extra couple of seeds will compensate.
Give me life, give me love, give me peace on earth.
  • I'm planning to get one of those cheap two shell plastic greenhouses for about £17 from Argos. I have no South facing windows and I'd like to start my seeds off in it. I also have a bit of a problem with slugs eating my lettuces. Once they've had a bite I cannot bring myself to eat them so hopefully having them "inside" will help. Thought I'd stand it on gravel to make it even more difficult for them. There'll be room in there for my toms and cues as well.
  • Every year I promise that I will treat myself to either a greenhouse or a polytunnel.
Instead I end up buying one of those mini plastic greenhouses that always end up with the plastic near the zip, ripping.
Have you any experience of growing tomatoes/veg etc in a polytunnel and how sturdy are they?
I have only ever seen the really big ones that they use on the allotments but I know you can get smaller ones.
Is the plastic stronger than the mini plastic geenhouses?
    Don't know which to get.
A bit worried about glass too, as the neighbours have 2 small sons who are at the throwing stage.

Hi I grow in a polytunnel, 14ft x 20ft. They are very sturdy mine is in somewhat of an exsposed site. I grow near enough every thing there. Which means an extra crop of most things.
In normal weather the tep is increased by a min of 4 degrees but when the sun is out it can be in the upper 30's so you have to mke sure you open the doors even in spring.
    Kind Regards
    Maz

I use this and have it in my favourites, but can't post my link. So I hope this helps. Try great competitions.co.uk click on gardening on the right you will see a website for gardening a....... or gardeningn....click on the top in blue will be forum... This might help you to get informations. Hope I'm not getting in trouble for doing this, it just saves money to read on line rather than buying. OOPPPPPSS don't tell me off. If I have done anything wrong please forgive me:o I was only trying to help as I cannot remember the names of the place I got mine. Looked everywere and still can't find the receipt.
  • And if you are really feeling adventurous, Alan at Over the Garden Gate has a great guide to making your own polytunnel .... http://www.overthegardengate.net/UserPages/pp_view.asp?FName=Polytunnel&Page=1.

Gawd thank for that if you have the energy, help, and cheap supplies it would be great. However if you haven't you're just a little bit stuck, and may need one that is not so time consuming or so rigourous to put together.

Hi, I have an 8' x 15' polytunnel located on hard standing so I have to use growbags or pots for everything. (I'm not unhappy about that because growing similar crops in the same soil year after year can lead to pests and diseases and a reduction in soil health and fertility.) So all my plants are in pots, and every year from no more than 8 tomato plants grown on canes and wires I have enough for fresh fruits July - October, and frozen (wonderful soup) for the remainder of the year. I've had 19lbs from one Gardener's Delight! I have all the aubergines I can eat from one plant, ditto cucumbers (2 plants) and bell peppers, and I produce an endless supply of pristinely clean lettuce in pots throughout the growing season and produce all my own annual flowers for the garden.
My tunnel is exposed to fierce winds across open fields on all sides and apart from the doors having slightly warped from the driving rain and ice I've had no other problem with it in the 4 years I've had it.
