It's probably this bit they dont like:
"The Civil Service Commissioners' annual report found that external appointees to Whitehall jobs were commanding up to double the salaries of people promoted internally."

I was just making the point that public services are fundamentally unprofitable. If they weren't, we wouldn't need the government to provide them. There must be room for efficiency savings but probably no more than a few per cent maximum without actually cutting something someone depends on somewhere.
I would like 8p off income tax though.0 -
Yeah right-ho!Tax revenues fund public sector jobs and these employees now represent the second highest paid group in society (after city jobs). They also enjoy the best perks and pension terms. Why should this privileged group be insulated from economic reality. If taxes go down, the public sector fat cats should share the pain with the rest of us.
.
Those working in the public sector are paid salaries in-line with similar jobs (whether private or public). They have to be, otherwise the top candidates would not be attracted to those jobs.0 -

The problem is that these jobs don't attract top candidates. Many highly paid public servants would be unemployable in the private sector. They give themselves grand titles, large salaries and then they delegate their work to private contractors. It is just 'jobs for the boys' and most promotion is done from the inside. I know of one very senior public servant who spends his days look at gay !!!!!! on the internet and another who is drunk by 11:00 am.0 -
In answer to your question, a close relative worked in the department of one of them and worked directly for the other (in a different department). The thing that surprised me most was that the staff and management just put up with it. It makes me wonder what you have to do to get fired in these jobs (make sexist remarks perhaps).:rotfl: Excuse my incredulity but how do you know these people? Which government department do these people work in?0 -

As far as I'm aware making blantantly sexist or racist remarks doesn't get you fired. I think if the remarks were reported in the media then you may be encouraged to go before you are sacked.
And yes I've got relatives and friends' who do and have worked in different government departments.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
