yes-switching "within" can incur exit fees if done too soon...however the fee is modest and maybe worth living with when compared to the figures the Npower advisor gives you for your new tariff.

Most Npower tariffs did not have an exit fee, even if you changed provider. I wonder when they sneaked the charge in on short fixes.

I have just rung Npower, as for the one year fix (which until now was exit fee free, even to change provider) the site says that an exit fee of £20 per fuel may be charged, if you leave or change tariff before March 13th 2017.

I wanted clarification on what the 'may' refers to and asked whether, if one changed to another one year fix (eg from April 2017 to June 2017),as I have done during the last 12 months, the fee would be applied.

The reply was that the call centre people do not know (it was a UK call centre, sounded Scottish) and that they had enquired higher up, but been told to just to emphasise that the charge may be made.

So I think we can take that as will.

I've been with them for many trouble free years as changing supplier only offered a possible saving of under £10 a year (based on past usage), but that change may now be worth making.

I rang nPower today to switch from my soon-to-expire Price Fix March 2016 to Online Saver April 2017.

uSwitch estimated a saving of £185 per year, and even nPower say £160 per year. I don't even use that much.

£20 cancellation penalty per fuel until March 2017.

I have emailed the press office for clarification of the 'may' used in the application of exit fee statement.

I don't use anyone else's estimate of saving. I apply the present and new tariffs to my known usage, as the 'savings' promised on bills are, like those on comparison sites, assuming a change to or from the Standard tariff.

No reply, yet ; unusual as the press office usually makes a prompt response.

My current npower fix also ends in April 2016 and after checking mse's cheap energy club I see that the April 2017 fix is the cheapest for dual fuel (incidentally their gas and electric prices separately equal those of their dual fuel). There are no fees for the April 2016 fix so it is very likely I will be switching through the energy club for the extra 30 quid.
I know that the new tariff has exit fees but I can't see prices coming down in the foreseeable future as the energy companies have made such massive reductions in their gas prices just recently:rotfl:.

    .

I don't think you can claim for staying with the same company. The £30 is for switching company and not tariff within a company.

I switched from npower dec 17 fix to may 17 feel good fix using energy club for £30 cashback.

Just spoke to npower again, asking about terms on moving just gas to April 17 tariff and said ok, but can't offer cashback themselves so has to be via comparison site.

Therefore I'm fairly sure everyone's eligible - I'll probably switch gas & electric as after £15 cashback for each it becomes worthwhile to do both.

If unsure it's obviously better to ask them onself.

    Interesting.

I wonder whether anyone else has managed this or you were lucky that someone didn't realise you weren't anew customer.

Just to be clear - I've called both times to check first, and all it comes down to is that suppliers aren't able to offer cashback direct so have to go through 3rd party. Told them outright that's what I'd do for the saving and even clarified it wouldn't be an issue for online account with rolling usage history so there's no existing/new customer pretence. Think it's pretty standard not lucky; from memory all that happens on npower's side is a later email confirming change of tariff with effect from x date and amended monthly payments.
