A Right to be Angry?

Comments

  • If he had known what their reaction would was going to be he would probably have left the lot to charity. No one has a right to an inheritance, and family who are not direct descendants should be happy they get anything.

They have no right to be angry with their uncle or you. You do not have deal with these people other than send them their inheritance once the estate is wrapped up, stop taking their calls and ignore any further correspondence.

I think they need a reminder of manners - they can be as angry as they like, but shouldn't take it out on you.

If the estate consists of something like a house that has been in the family for generations I can see why they might have expected it to stay in the family.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

There isn't a day that goes by when one family member or another are complaining about what has happened. T

I wonder if they were in such constant contact with their uncle when he was alive?
  • Angry at you?

What do they expect you to do, break the law? If you took the charity money and gave it to them you'd be in serious trouble

Who/What are they angry with? The Uncle who hasn't left them the full amount or the rules of Inheritance tax which seems to be his rationale behind it?

Sounds like your old friend had the measure of his family -which is why you and not they were his executor.

Sadly, I think you are right. The funeral was attended by only 3 family members.

Are they angry because they had greater expectations and have only just found out what they will actually inherit ? Settling an estate takes time and they may have mentally or actually have spent money in advance based on expectation and once they are over the shock will calm down and shut up.

They rarely visited - despite being less than an hour away by car. He wasn't bothered as he had many friends, but in my mind they were conspicuos by their absence.

Never fails to amaze me how greedy people are around death. It really does bring out the worst in people. No they have no right to be angry about anything, they should direct that energy at making the money they desire for themselves.
