Ha ha! Did you bother to find out whether it's possible for a newly bought computer to have an activated copy of Windows 8.1 yet not have a product key?!

Identifying the key is a lot quicker than spending several hours (by your estimation) installing Windows one more time than necessary.

You still haven't answered why it would be better to install Windows 10 twice! What's the benefit in wasting time? There must be some reason you'd suggest it.

At the end of the day there's no point arguing about which is better. If the OP has the facts they can decide for themselves.

No - in the last few days I bought a laptop from Tesco with Win 8.1 pre installed - fairly easy to upgrade it to Win 10 though

Just bought two from Argos with windows 8, free to upgrade to windows 10. Lots for sale with windows 8 on.

I'd imagine it was free. I cannot imagine anyone agreeing to pay extra in order to upgrade a brand new system.
