win10 upgrade on new PC

Options
Hi
Have just ordered a new PC with win8.1 loaded. I intend to upgrade to Win10, is it better to upgrade before or after loading my software, documents and photo's.

a wize person would upgrade it first , in case of failure

another wize person might comment that the machine must haver been sat unsold in a warehouse since july last year , as most manufacturers were rushing after that date to supply win 10 computers

Wait until you have upgraded to 10, particularly that you are starting with a clean slate should make it the sensible approach. ;)

I would have thought by now all machines being sold would have 10 pre-installed.

Ignore the doom merchants. Chances are it'll auto-upgrade to 10 when you switch it on. If not, as a precaution, find your 8.1 key e.g. https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Personally I would do the Win10 upgrade and activate online. I would then download the media upgrade tool, install to a flash drive/DVD and do a fresh install from boot to get rid of the random crap the shops love loading onto new PCs.

I don't think I'd bother to do an in-place upgrade (unless you think you might want to use the crapware that's preinstalled).

It's probably better to upgrade to a clean installation of Windows 10 by downloading an ISO image of the installation media. You can activate it with an existing Windows 7/8 product key.

why muck about with activation keys , just do the upgrade , make sure its registered THEN run a clean (custom) install

a couple of hours tonight and a couple tomorrow , job done THEN install proggys etc

Errr... because it's a hell of a lot quicker to type in a key than to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 10!

Honestly, why bother mucking around with unnecessary Windows installations?

Or... tens of minutes installing Windows 10 and... Oh, that's it. A day off tomorrow!

why muck about trying to find a windows key , just set the thing to upgrade and walk away , THEN do a clean install tomorrow in your "proverbal" tens of minutes

Why muck about doing an unnecessary upgrade and being unable to use your computer for your "proverbal" (?!) hours on end?

Just check the key and do a clean installation without wasting anyone's time.

have you bothered to ask the OP if they have a key? , I did,nt bother asking as the Microsoft recommended way removes that question.

anyway back to the OPs question , upgrade it before installing your files
