Good prepaid cash card for kids abroad?

Options
My daughter (age 9) has a trip abroad planned, 2 weeks in Austria with local Brownies. I was wondering about sending her with spending money on a prepaid cash card as an alternative to just sending her with a wad of Euro's in cash.

Anyone have any experience with these (I've never used one)? And in particular with kids off abroad? Any recommendations please?

All the ones I've looked at are either for over 18's only, or have horrible exchange rates/fees. :(

FairFX appears good, but only 14-18 year olds.

Seems the goHenry card is the only option for a 9 year old.

2.75% fee on foreign transactions mind, and £2 min fee on atm withdrawals. Plus a £2.50/month subscription on card and a 50p topup fee when not using a S.O. or direct debt.

It's doable, but not cheap. Probably just wing it sending her off with cash...

I don't see why you can't get a card on your name and give it to her. IIRC somebody suggested this in that thread.

The Revolut card is good, easy to top up and if it's still available you get a free £5 top up when you use the code, look for the Revolut card thread in the overseas travel section.

I would think that the Trip Leader would be running a 'bank' for small amounts of pocket money in cash to be handed out where spending opportunities arise ie. the adult is given the money by parent and looks after it until a certain point where children may spend the money. That's my experience of many school and Cub/Scout?Explorer/DofE trips. Certainly for a 9 year old!

My brownies on any trip we undertake, (pack holiday, Disney, Chessington, Thorpe Park) hand in their money to me and the other brownie leaders and we give back the purses when the girls are wishing to spend their money.

I would think this would be the safer solution especially as your daughter is going for 2 weeks, I wouldnt like to give any 9 year old the responsibility of the amount of cash required for such trip. Also considering many brownies struggle to keep their own clothes and uniform in their own suitcases, also its too easy for money to go missing.

if you still require a prepaid card have you tried Pockit? you can have a card with additional card for your daughter so you can manage the spending as its one account you can view and control.
