My query is a bit different in that I have decided to switch to Ovo and have started the process, but have just received an email from British Gas to say I will incur penalties of £30 for gas and £30 for electriciy if I switch before 31 March 2016. I have checked and double checked and read on the Ofgem website and spoken to someone at British Gas who said I was within the time slot that I could chancge of 42-49 days. Why am I being told in an email from British Gas that I can't switch? Who is giving me the correct advice? TIA

it took British Gas 5 days to get back to me after I had asked the question of them online and filled out their Contact Us online enquiry form, so when I hadn't heard from them, I decided to read up on my rights on Ofgem and they said it was 42-49 days that they have to let you know that your tariff is comeing to an end and you can switch any time during this period to a new supplier. I also phoned British Gas and they said I could switch, but then I finally get this email answer telling me I had to wait and the new switching period of 42-49 days only applied to new tariffs, I thought the Ofgem ruling was made brought in in 2013? They don't make it easy for you, do they?

I would raise a formal complaint so that the person who sent the e-mail gets some training.
