Thanks...will have to do some digging! It is unfortunate that (like some states in the US) we can't just get a license and marry in the in laws beautiful huge back garden.

There's nothing to stop you just doing the legal minimum at the RO and then having a wedding (with your own vows, etc) in the back garden.

What general area are you looking in ?
Maybe someone can recommend a really nice one nearish to you

We're in South Bucks. Parents are in Marlow, but there's no registry office there which is a shame as can you imagine photos in front of the river? Come to think of it, nothing to stop us picnicking with prosecco on a warm day by the Thames, after the ceremony - so much to think about!

I suppose we're looking at Wycombe, Old Beaconsfied, Henley and Maidenhead. High Wycombes ceremony room is now on the second floor of the library - not very romantic, but convenient as we go there often anyway :p

    That sounds lovely

I got my buffet from waitrose, all beautifully presented in serving dishes, salmon, terrines and salads, was delish and ideal for picnic food

Love Waitrose - oh my, the REDUCTIONS. Some quiche, salads, picky bits and a big homemade victoria sponge would be lovely with some fizz. And if the weather isn't fine we can have supper at the in laws then retire to the pub.

Just emailed my mum and we are going to order rings on Saturday :j

Try Abingdon or Oxford then- both registry offices are spectacular and close to the river

And to confirm- you can marry in any venue licensed for civil ceremonies (not all are reg offices) but will have to do the preliminary 'giving notice' in whichever borough you are resident
  • We got married in December last year. It was me, other half, and 2 witnesses. That's it. I don't regret it at all, we had a wedding celebration meal afterwards back home in Essex with my family, which was lovely too :)

I will look into Abingdon and Oxford, thanks :)

Martin - that sounds lovely. To be honest deciding not to have a big wedding is a weight off my shoulders...it just seemed like another thing to tick off financially, which probably means it's best we don't bother!

There are some amazing wedding venues in the South Bucks area and many by the river, but they all come with very high prices.

Court Garden House in Marlow is right next to the river, and not in the same price range as many in the area.

Otherwise - choose whichever Register or Registration Office (There is no such thing as a Registry Office) you like and which is convenient to you and then have a reception/party elsewhere.

Technically you can get your in-laws house/garden licensed as a wedding venue and get married there, but the process is not simple and very expensive.

I'm sure most people know what I'm referring to ;)

Court Garden would be worth looking into, thanks!

I thought they only did package deals but their website implies otherwise, though no actual prices are there. As much as I am more interested in the bit of paper than anything else, there's something about getting married on the second floor of a library which doesn't quite sit right (although Mayfair Library is currently available for ceremonies, and looks lovely!)

I did at one point look into registering somewhere but it needs to be a place which is publicly accessible which would make a private home up a one track road a bit of a no-no.
