Sim only?
Options
I've been given a 5s iphone that was on contract to 02 and told that I just need a SIM.
That's as much as I know about mobiles as I only have a old phone (not a smartphone).
Do I need to get this iphone unlocked?
Next question, what SIM to cover all the data the phone will need for updates? It will be used the odd time for surfing when I am out and can connect to my wi-fi when home. Looking to spend about £10ish a month.
Thanks.

Whether you get it unlocked will depend what network you go with, no need to get it unlocked if your going to stay with 02.
Do all updates over wifi is my suggestion, Im sure there's a setting on the phone for this.
I'm sure you can get a Tesco Mobile sim and as they use the 02 network you wont need to get the phone unlocked.
Oh if you didn't know the 5s takes a nano sim.0 -
There a pay and go for £10 with 02 - 500gb, 250 mins, 1000 texts - if ur a lightest user that should be perfect.
My daughter got 250mb in her iPhone - she does hit that within 2 weeks (just upgraded her contract), if u so all ur downloading and updates etc on the home wifi - that should be perfect.
Xxx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx0 -
What's a "nano sim"?
This is going to sound really silly, but how do I get a SIM? Online? In a shop?
Do I need a contract or can it be PAYG, as I have now with o2 on a really old phone?
Thanks for the replies.0 -

Either online or in the shop it doesn't matter which. If you take the phone with you to the shop they'll give you the right sized SIM.
A contract is good if you use a lot as the rates are cheaper. I pay £0 per month for 100 minutes, 250 texts and 200Mb of data with TalkTalk Broadband but that particular deal may not be available any more. I've seen contract deals for £1 for very very light users which give about 50 minutes and some texts each month. I can't remember which network that was. edit: it's Vectone http://www.vectonemobile.co.uk/pay-monthly-sim-only-deal.aspx
PAYG is good too as it's impossible to get an unexpected bill for inadvertently going over the limit. Once the credit runs out that's it until you top up again.
EE's £1 per week PAYG plan is quite good for low users.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Nano sim is the size of the sim, older phones use the standard sim.
Can get the sim online from various websites or in a shop eg Tesco Mobile, 02 shop.
I guess a question to ask is do you have a Broadband/internet package with say Virgin or Talk Talk.
To get it unlocked you may have to ask the previous owner to ring 02 and ask if they can unlock it.0 -

You could swap the o2 sim from the really old phone to the 5s. May need to cut down the sim to nano size.I am not a cat (But my friend is)0 -

To use another network the phone will need to be unlocked. It's also a good idea to get the phone unlocked at the end of a contract because it's often free, increases the resale value and avoid issues later.
£10 a month will buy you 500 mins, 5000 txts and 4GB of 4G data on a sim only plan from IDmobile (Dixons Carphone's MVNO run on Three). It offers lower cost plans and £5 will get 250 mins, 5000 txts and 1GB 4G data.
http://www.idmobile.co.uk/shop/plans/sim-only
Life Mobile (EE MVNO) have a deal currently though Uswitch for 1500 mins, Unlimited texts and 1GB of 3G data for £6 a month.

The EE and Three networks tend to offer better UK wide coverage and reliablity for internet use compared to O2 or Voda. That siad no networks covers everywhere so it boils down to what works best where you need it most.0 -

Are you sure you don't mean 500mb??0 -
Thanks for all the replies.
I don't seem to be able to quote. In answer to your questions-
My BB is with Sky.
The 5s was with an o2 contract and the person who gave me the phone has recently taken out a new contract with o2. I assume they could still get o2 to unlock this phone?0 -

The mobile is 4G. Do I need to use 4G or is 3G ok? What do I lose if I use 3G?
If I sign up to the above offer (contract?) do they send me the SIM? Is that how it works?
Sorry for all the questions.0
