You could send them to me :D

On a less silly note, fig and goats cheese tart is scrummy!

  • Delicious on fresh crusty bread, with some (preferably goats) mellow cheese, then the fig, then a drizzle of honey......one of the best low stress lunches possible.....tastes of summer.

you forgot to mention the glass of wine to compliment it all. ;)
  • Hello all,

My title is a little tongue in cheek. My father arrived over the weekend with 'gifts' for me.

Several kilos of crab apples and several more kilos of not quite ripe figs.

One might almost think my Aged Parentals were trying to say something!

I'm happy with the crab apples and am slowly making my way through the lots to cut out bruised bits before starting the process for crab apple jelly.

The figs are proving somewhat more of a challenge.

There are too many to try ripening with a brown bag and banana. The majority are probably half way to being edibly ripe. If you see what I mean.

Personally I cannot stand figs - remind me far too much of being fed syrup of figs as a child. Bleurgh!

However; most of the rest of the family love them. So I was wondering. Would a jam with ginger work or perhaps a chutney?

I'd be grateful for any ideas or advice. Even if it is only to chuck them on the compost bin.

    Thanks in advance

never tried it because I loathe fresh figs (funnily enough I love fig rolls though):

  • Thanks Grimbal. Not sure if it would work with unripe figs but got nothing to lose!

  • Hi Mogwai,

Loving the sound of the second link. Might have to wait until the weekend though as not got spare cash for red wine vinegar floating around until budget day. Wonder if it would work with normal white vinegar - or half and half.

I love chutney too - great for Christmas presents.
  • Hi Bossymoo, didn't mean to ignore your post, just missed it. My neighbours are lovely but I'm not sure they'd have the faintest idea of what to do with a fig.

no need to cut out bruises for crabapple jelly making, only bits that are actually going off.
