  • Apart from eating them fresh, obviously, you can roast them gently in the oven, and serve them hot, with cream or yoghurt. If they are a bit under-ripe, or sour, sprinkle a little brown sugar on them. Figs were 6 for £1 yesterday in the Holloway Rd, so I got 12, and I'm thinking of roasting a few myself today while I've got the oven on. I can't give you a time or anything, sorry, but I reckon half an hour in a medium/hot oven would be about right.

  • Hi,

I sometimes make a salad at this time of year based on parma ham, goat's cheese and figs with rocket, tomatoes and spring onions, using a little honey in the dressing (with some olive oil and vinegar).

How lucky you are! Having recently moved back to the UK from France I have been apalled at the price of figs in the shops - after being used to collecting them from the trees in France.
I would love to grow a fig tree but fear that up here in South Yorkshire the climate would not be warm enough. Do you live in the south? Do you have any tips on growing figs?

    fig tart tatin
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarte_Tatin

given how soft the fruit is.make your caramel 1st. so approx 40/60 butter to suger and boil it up in a pan till a nice golden brown.
carefully pout into the dish/s you are using for the tatin.
place the cut figs in the caramel.halves are fine.
roll out puff pastry and then cut in oversized circles or whatever.
place on top of the fruit and tuck the edges dow to create a sort of upside down bowl shape.
cut a vent hole and sprikle with white suger.
bake and (carefully) turn out while hot. be careful as its hot caramel.
on a plate with a sprinkle of icing suger and ice cream or creme chantilly
  • I just chop them in half length ways and put a blob of greek yoghurt and a drizzle of runny honey ontop. Mmmmmm. Not v adventurous tho!
  • The other thing is warmed fig (stand it up and slice the top section open in an X shape) with blue cheese and balsamic vinegar in top.
  • so i got two figs in lidl as they were only 19p each and i thought "fab i can do stuff with them", but now i'm flummoxed! :o:o

i thought : add to apple crumble.
    bake with honey.
    eat as they are.

but i've never had fresh figs before so i have no idea what i'm doing, Help!!!!!

  • I like them baked (cut a cross in the middle and add a bit of honey) with ice cream; simple and yum.
