I was looking into what tools I would need to buy to develop an app:

1) visual studio community edition - free
2) sql server developer edition - about £50

I would be interested to hear what other developers have in their toolkit. How much do you spend per year on tools? How long have you been in business? Do you have any employees? Have you used bizspark? If you did have bizspark then what tools did you have at the end of the three years?

My question is about the toolkit used and not the idea. This question was asked a few times on stackoverflow, but was closed by the moderators because it is not deemed to be about programming ie not technical.
  • Why would you need to buy something? isn't Android Studio and SDK free?

It all depends on the area you wish to concentrate on.

For instance, if you wish to develope databases, then any tools that allow the creation of SQL/PostgreSQL/MySQL databases would be required.

On the other hand, if you are looking into website developement, you will need toolkits that allow the development of PHP, Ruby or Ruby-on-Rails.

You'd be better off on http://programmers.stackexchange.com/. Stack overflow is for technical Q&A. You'd also need to give a bit more information about what sort of "app" you are developing.

The sorts of things people would need to know are: What sort of thing are you developing (game, productivity, service, web, etc.) and what sort of platforms are you targeting (phones, tablets, desktops, rasberry pi's, etc. and what o/s). What is your background and and experience? How deep are your pockets?

I am a software developer with about seven years experience in my current role.

I was just interested how much other developers spend on tools to work in their free time. This is off topic on stackoverflow.

For example are you a lone developer using open source tools or do you have an msdn subscription spending on visual studio ultimate? Somewhere in between I guess?

That's slightly different wording! I used to spend nought and use freebies or my work laptop wherever I could :) At the moment I'm too busy!
  • I mainly use Android Studio. Also Sublime Text as my text editor when I need to do a bit of web programming. I've never fall in love in any text editor, save for Sublime Text.
