Does anyone know a quick fix for this? Looking online everything looks really complicated like shutting down start up files that aren't needed etc...

My physical memory is running at 91% which is strange considering that i have a 1 TB hard drive!

I'm using Windows 7 home premium. When my physical memory reaches 96% the whole laptop crashes and i have to turn it off but once i've turned it off and reboot it everything is fine. I dont know what is causing it...

svchost memory leaks are mostly down to malware/viruses ..

So in the first instance I would run a malwarebytes scan :-

    https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/

Choose the free version and decline the trial for malwarebytes pro.

If the issue persists after this, come back for more advice

PS, the memory usage it is referring to has nothing to do with the size of your hard drive, but rather the physical memory (RAM) on the machine

I've recently purchased Avast premium and did a full system scan last week. I'm virus free but i'll run another now to see if anything has got in and get back to you.

    Leave avast for now.

    Use malwarebytes and report back

(avast wont pick up malware, and may infact be the cause of your problem - but we will get to that)

    Hope this helps

That's RAM and unrelated to your hard drive.
  • Ive had this several times and sorted it, but I can't remember exactly what it was! It wasn't a virus, I think it was an update error. certain updates installed and it went away. Check if it will update on windows update, I bet it won't.

This is a well-known issue with Windows Update on W7 post-Service Pack 1. It can be a bl00dy right PITA to sort out - there are lots of threads/forums/etc out there with various solutions (but unfortunately not one single definitive one), very often you solve it by sheer accident :(

The easiest way to see if this issue is related to updates, is to go in task manager, go to processes, RIGHT click on the process with the memory leak, and click "go to services" ..
If the service that it goes to is called WUAUSERV , then the issue is related to the update service ..
