The easiest way to see if this issue is related to updates, is to go in task manager, go to processes, RIGHT click on the process with the memory leak, and click "go to services" ..
If the service that it goes to is called WUAUSERV , then the issue is related to the update service ..

Also in the services tab, check if the BITS service is running... if it isn't, WU will hang every time....

I ran malwarebytes and i think i'm about to set a forum record :o i had 437 threat files! Mostly PUPs and loads of adware from 1 click video downloader which is an add on i use to download youtube videos of stampy cat to keep the kids quiet on long car journeys.

I also disabled the windows update thing and my physical memory at the moment is 52% so everything looks to have worked. Also after i restarted the computer when i ran malwarebytes my bootup time was only 13 seconds. Usually its about 30 so its improved there as well :)

What i dont get though is why my anti virus never picked up those files?

Haha glad you got sorted ..

Malware is always the first thing to check in situations like this ..

Make you feel a bit better, 437 is not that many really, iv had machines presented to me with thousands on !

As I said to you, Avast ANTIVIRUS wont pick these up, because they are not viruses in the technical definition , they are classed as malware ..

It is a contentious issue, buy my personal belief is that you don't need any antivirus atall other than the standard windows defender etc.
Viruses are few and far between these days, and most people know not to click on shady links in emails which is where most of the infection vectors lie ..

You certainly don't want to be paying for one , look what good its done you !!

Run a malwarebytes scan every couple of weeks and you should be sound

    Glad your sorted
