The Old Style Forum Description

Hello everyone. It has recently been pointed out that our description in the forums listing, with its reference to WW2 etc, does not truly reflect the nature of the busy forum that Old Style has become, and that a change on the Forum Home Page might attract a broader range of readers.
I broached the subject with MSE Martin and he agreed to review this and when I offered to find three or four options for him to decide on his answer was just one word. "Perfect"
Perhaps the first question should be "Do we really need a change?"
If you all decide that the answer is yes, then I'd like you all to add a suggestion for a new description to this thread if you wish.
Note: The longer forum descriptions are approximately thirty words long so it would be a good idea to try to keep the maximum length of your offering close to this figure.
After a reasonable time interval to give everyone a chance (perhaps a week?) then the suggestions could be collected up and placed into a straightforward poll, again with a reasonable time limit (perhaps a week?)
Note: Polls are limited to ten entries, so if you have more than this you will need to choose from among yourselves a committee to choose the entries you think provide a good range of descriptions to vote on.
At the end of the Poll time I shall PM MSE Martin the results of the poll along with a pointer to this thread so he can get a good indication of why each description was put forward.
The floor is all yours...
White vinegar for cleaning, WWII rationing for budgeting. The good ol'days brought back.

My, someone was up with the lark today.
Thanks for all of your hard work on this, Squeaky.
I still like the edited: Old Style is about Lifestyle. Making best use of budgets by shopping wisely and thriftily, cooking from scratch, cleaning your house for pennies, growing food, and more. Take control of your life.
I particularly like the "Take control of your life" part.
But I also don't think we need to labour this description business too much. I didn't notice the description until several days after I joined because I was pointed to the thread by so many MSErs. If there's something that anyone thinks should particularly be in the description but there's no room or it gets too waffley, surely we can start a sticky with it instead?spendy/she/her ***DEBT-FREE DATE: 11 NOVEMBER 2022!*** Highest debt: £35k (2006) MY WINS: £3,541 CASH; £149 Specsavers voucher; free eye test; goody bag from Scottish Book Trust; tickets to Grand Designs Live; 2-year access to Feel Amazing App (worth £100); Home Improvement & Renovation Show tickets; £50 to spend on chocolate; Harlem Globetrotters tickets; Jesus Christ Superstar tickets + 2 t-shirts; Guardians of the Galaxy goody bag; Birmingham City v Barnsley FC tickets; Marillion tickets; Dancing on Ice tickets; Barnsley FC v Millwall tickets0 -
I think it was unfair that you closed that thread because you didn't like the answers. People have given you their responses and some ideas. I hate it when board guides close threads as and when they like especially. No offence intended but I feel it was closed because someone annoyed the contributers. All my views are just that and do not constitute legal advice in any way, shape or form.£2.00 savers club - £20.00 saved and banked (got a £2.00 pig and not counted the rest)Joined Store Cupboard Challenge]0

I closed that thread because, as was pointed out, I was wrong to limit choices to a few set ones. Not because I didn't like the answers.
Then I opened this one to allow for as many suggestions in as open and free a manner as possible, as you yourself suggested here.
The answers in the old thread are still available to be read and people can by all means copy and paste their suggestions across into this thread. Your post, for which I thanked you at the time, can be copied from here.
It is this thread where the all of the suggestions will be yours the readers, and where you the readers, make all the choices.
It seemed right to start again from scratch rather than perpetuate the error of limitations.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. With reference to Squeaky's opening post, I would like to see the description changed because it's a little frumpy and old-fashioned and not entirely to the point. Suggestions were asked for so here goes, this is not an original piece of work, it has lots of bits from other posts earlier.
Old Style is about Life Style, from thrifty shopping on a tight budget, cleaning without chemicals, to growing and enjoying good food. Take control of your life.0 -
I've collected the first series of suggestions from the other thread into this post. If I missed anyone out I'm sorry - let me know and I'll sort it out straight away.

There's nothing wrong with "cheap and cheerful", getting the best value for every penny, and making a little go a long way without compromising quality of life. So join the club!

This is the best one in my opinion!

I'm still going with Option 5
Back to basics: cooking from scratch, homemade cleaners, menu planning, shopping wisdom. Make it, grow it, save, don't waste it. Pinch that penny and squeeze that pound.
I still like this one, I now feel I'm not in the right age bracket to be selecting for this board though, so I will wish you luck and will pop through and see how you are you doing in the future! :J0 -
