Ever been catfished?

I'm having a slow Sunday...

Has anyone ever been - or know somebody who has been - catfished?

A catfish is somebody you meet online, who turns out not to be who they say they are.

So, for example, you could have fallen in love with 30yo Craig the firefighter, but he turns out to be 45yo Eric the used car salesman.

Usually a catfish will pull out any excuse to avoid video chats or meeting in person, lest they be exposed. Often they'll use somebody else's photos. Sometimes they do it for money (they ask for gifts) but usually it's just for attention.

There's an American TV show, Catfish, which followed a film of the same name. Trashy, but fun viewing.

    Yes.

I was talking to a guy online and he said he worked on an oil rig near Iraq.

A few days later he said he could see pirates coming and he feared he was going to be kidnapped. I was so upset and a few hours later his wife came online on told me to block him as he does this all the time.

Back in early day mobile phones that had internet there used to be this thing called WAP chat. When i was bored in the evening i would go on there and chat up older women in the 18-30's room via 121 chat. They had no idea they were talking to a 15 year old. 1 woman caught me out though when i told her i was a maths teacher and she put a question to me asking if i knew what country the calculator was invented in?

    I said Africa :o

  • I haven't been, but a friend of mine has been. We laugh about how pathetic he was :)
  • When my soon to be ex-wife was having an affair with a bloke she met online I created the fake profile of a female, started chatting to him in messaging and arranged to meet up.

Handed the log to my wife who went mad. But carried on the affair anyway.

Had to read this twice. This is brilliant. How long did you do this for?

Sorry to hear things went belly up with your wife, though. :/

I should have left her then. Not 14 years later. It would have saved me a fortune!
