Thanks for the replies and advice.

If we are not satisfied with the dealers answers relating to the clutch and the gears, are we entitled to take it elsewhere to get a diagnosis and get the dealer to fix the faults that have been found?

If you're not satisfied with the dealers solution then you are into the realms of an independent inspection and see what the outcome of that is.

If it reports faults, then you would take that to the dealer. If he still refuses, then you're probably in to the realms of having the repairs done else where and taking him to court for the price of it.

RE: the gearbox, I've had a lot of luck in the past with a gearbox oil change and a Slick 50 gearbox oil treatment - dont forget chances are that oil has been in there since the car was built, so it might not necessarily need a new gearbox or an expensive gearbox repair.

It's an older car but it's not a banger, it's a family car for the foreseeable future. Even if the clutch issue is down to wear and tear over the years, should it not be corrected by the dealer when they sell it on?

    Thanks

Yes, totally. Particularly given you told the dealer about it pre purchase.

I personally wouldn't have bought an 11 yr old Galaxy for long term ownership.

They hold value very well as they are practical and decent to drive.

But they are also regularly clocked after having their lifespan used up by a PH or Taxi driver.

They also suffer with being treated as a "white good" by families and often only sold on when they are on their last legs.

One of the few occasions I would have advised not to buy that old, as if you increased your budget to £6000 or so you could have had a 3yr old Zafira for example.

Find a nice older Galaxy and you have a nice family vehicle.

Find a wrong in and they can be an expensive headache.

If memory serves they have a hydraulic clutch, what is possible is that the clutch fluid has never been changed, have been told that that can cause a sticky clutch pedal but have no direct experince on a Galaxy but before we disposed of the Clio the clutch would occasionally stick down and have to be released with your foot.

It could also be a slave or master cyclometer problem, but fluid is easier and cheaper so always start there.

The dealer is likely only concerned with getting you out the door so it may be a case of fixing the problems yourself.

The climate controls often got sticky even when new if the experiences of colleagues is anything to go by.

Clock is a couple of quid on eBay.

I only know one person with parking sensors on his old Galaxy, his was a 52 plate that he owned from 9months old and they were temperamental after the first year, in the end he disconnected them as they would randomly beep when nothing was behind, I wonder if the previous owner did the same in this case?

Gearbox problem could also be due to a fault with the clutch, especially a hydraulic clutch that has not been given proper maintenance.

hi,this vehicle has a concentric slave cylinder and it is most likely this sticking
it would need a gearbox off to fix if im right and dealer obviously is trying not to go this route
i would give them one attempt within the first 30 days to fix to your satisfaction or reject the car as it was in your original terms and conditions that clutch pedal was fixed prior to collection which plainly it wasnt
have you contacted citizens advice yet

sticky switches are down to you and sensors for parking should only work if advertised with them, did you see a pdi inspection sheet from dealer that you checked and signed?
i insist customers read and sign these so we all know what was and isnt working at pos
trading standards like dealers to complete these pdi's too prior to sale

Yup. Hence there is a fault there that needs addressed

Could be an easy fix, but its still a fault. The O/P has parted £3,100 of their own hard earned on a car that has faults - several of which the dealer had previously agreed to resolve.

    +1

If i needed a 7 seater i'd find it hard to walk past a Zafira - specifically the 1.8i petrol variant. Cheap as chips to run and quite frugal.

Thanks for the reply and advice.

We were not shown a PDI inspection sheet prior to looking at it ourselves, even though you have mentioned it I don't know what that actually is and that we should have been shown it.

Is this a legal requirement these days or something that should be shown to customers to be upfront and honest from the beginning?

    Regards

Thanks for the message, I have stayed away from Vauxhalls as I've just got rid of a Vectra C prior to getting this Ford and I've never spent so much money on a car fixing it after having problem after problem with it.

The galaxy had the best space inside it for a vehicle that we could afford, hence going for it. If we would have had more money at our disposal then we could have gone for something newer or different but this was all we could get in our budget that was in a decent radius to view at the time.

    Thanks

PDI = Pre Delivery Inspection. Mostly, it's a new car thing - when the car comes off the transporter, and is cleaned/prepped/plates attached before delivery - that's the PDI.

No, there's no legal requirement for one to be carried out at all, let alone a putative buyer be shown some kind of sheet.
