Will applying for a provisional effect my ESA/PIP?

  • If DWP ever query your provisional say you got it for identification purposes as its cheaper than a passport.

To be honest it might help to build your confidence of leaving the house and gradually reduce your anxiety. One step at a time.

An application for a provisional DL is not considered to be a declaration that you are better.
A lot of folk get a provisional DL just for use as official ID.

Its not for ID though. The OP has already said an application for provisional is in order to drive

I think the check is purely for identification purposes. It won't cause any issues.

I would apply for it- it's a no pressure option. You know you have the licence and that you will have the option to learn to drive when you feel ready.

Hi, I didn't end up applying it as my mental health is quite bad and has since deteriorated further xx

For the record, in case the opportunity arises again, applying for your licence would be highly unlikely on it's own to result in a negative PIP or ESA decision, nor would you receiving a car as a gift.
Driving however, can be seen by decision makers as an indicator that you are able to concentrate, sit, bend to get in out of the vehicle, have some manual dexterity, can plan a route, understand road signs, and respond to situations/make decisions.
If your claims are based on an inability to do any of these things, and you begin to drive, you may need to explain the adaptations you make to make driving possible.
