Will applying for a provisional effect my ESA/PIP?

Hi

I currently claim ESA and PIP for servere anxiety, depression. I struggle to interact with others and leave the house.

A family member has offered to give me their car for the future, for when I'm feeling better however she has asked me to get a provisional license before she gives me it to prove that I am serious about getting better and will not just let the car go to waste.

I've looked on the provisional forms and they mention that they contact DWP. I am concerned that if they do so then assumptions will be made that I am learning to drive and going out etc, which isn't the case and won't be the case for at least 6 months to a year as there's no way I could concentrate enough to learn to drive or be around a learning instructor.

I am tempted to say I don't want the car because of all of this, however it has been in the family for a long time and has sentimental value to it.

Any opinions please? I'm really stressed about this.

    No need to get stressed...

    from the gov website

    Personal data

If you apply online you’ll be agreeing that DVLA can check your personal data, including your National Insurance number.
DVLA will confirm your details with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
DVLA will send you a confirmation email once you’ve applied. You might be asked to take part in research by email, but you can opt out.

It also states You can drive a car when you are 16 if you get, or have applied for, the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
  • I'm just worried that if they think I'm driving (which I won't be for a while) that I am getting better or something x
  • Why don't you just ask your family member to keep hold of it until you are better?
  • They don't have the space. A lot of my family members rush me in to things im not comfortable with in the hope of curing me haha and they're saying if I don't get a provisional then they'll sell it instead of giving it to me. To be honest the stress it's causing me I think I'd rather them sell it x

As an aside point. Anxiety and depression should be notified to the DVLA......IF ....they affect your driving. It sounds fro your comments at the moment that they DO - so for that reason Id hold off getting the provisional until you can properly say your condition would not affect your driving.

  • Yes I've looked through the form and saw the medical information bit and it mentioned severe mental health conditions. It seems a shame to declare that when if I wait until the future I could (possibly/hopefully) be free of the severity of it and it be more mild. I think I'm going to leave it and possibly buy my self a car once I'm working in the future :)
  • I think that's the right decision for you :T
  • Thanks, me too :) my family just pressurise me constantly which doesn't help, but I need to take it at my own pace :)

I'm assuming if it's old enough to have sentimental value it may not be the easiest thing to drive! I have an old sentimental Morris minor and the lack of power steering and ABS isn't the most fun thing to drive, being used to a car with both. Plus if it's raining and dark it doesn't have enough power to run both wipers and lights :p
  • you have to do things in your own time at your own speed OP
