O/S Daily Saturday 20 February 2016

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine

Morning everyone

Birthday Wishes to those with a birthday x

Still dark, looks damp underfoot but no rain and not much wind - at the moment, forecast doesn't look that promising for the weekend but it will be very mild.

Dinner last night was chicken and ham kievs, chips, beans/salad for the menfolk, I had a jacket potato, beans, cheese and salad, ice cream for dessert. Tonight dinner will be egg and veg fried rice, veg noodles, chicken in black bean sauce and bbq spare ribs, reasonably easy dinner.

I was reasonably productive yesterday - I got to the SM early and it was really quiet - so zoomed round and got everything from there I could, then stopped off at MrL's on the way back past (not out of my way as it's on the main road back to our house with the MrT a bit further up - for a small town we really have a good selection of food shops - clothes and other stuff not so good!) I still need to cut the spend down but yesterday I needed more dishwasher salt and dishwaster rinse aid - MrA...is doesn't stock either of these, so not a massive spend but a needed one. I was surprised at the checkout though in MrAl...is at the cost - £94 ish - I thought it would be at least £100-£105 ish - I bought a half leg of lamb for Sunday roast, 1 pkt chicken breasts, several bottles of wine, and then all the normal grocery type items - just such a shame I can't just shop there but there's some things they just don't sell, and some branded bits that we need. But I know I'm keeping a much better grip on the grocery spends, I'm also finding that unless we use loads of bread and milk I don't need to visit the SM for a top up shop either - that's my downfall, if I go in "just" for milk/bread I come out having spend £20! Menu planning is key too, I always look at what I have left and what we're doing etc and do a menu plan from there - always with a bit of wiggle room in case there's anything that's a too good bargain to not buy or plans change.

I got the ironing done once I got back from the SM and there's just work clothes that need washing/drying today.

I met DS1 straight out from work in town yesterday and we went to the phone shop. He now has a shiny new phone, but we have to return today as the number needs to be activated - he had a sim only contract that was coming out of my bank account on dd - he now has a 2 year contract - so he's set up a dd from his bank to pay for it. I also spoke to the assistants in the shop regarding my contract and have paid my device plan off, and then taken a new 1 year sim only contract - making a big saving per month - the saving will be the device part of the contract is now paid off and cancelled and the airtime part is a cheaper tariff with good amounts of included telephone minutes, unlimited texts, and 500mb of data - the only things I really use are the free texts and the telephone minutes but I never use all of those possibly 5-10 minutes in a month, but there's nothing cheaper that includes unlimited texts. But some good money saving this week with this and changing the household insurance.

Today we'll be heading to the bank then the phone shop, we'll be visiting the family too.

Have good Saturdays' everyone x

Keep safe and well x

  • Morning everyone, it is not raining but cold and blowy. I still have stuff to do, things I failed to do yesterday because of feeling a bit fed up.

Nmlc your dinner tonight sounds remarkably similar to what I made last night. There is a little rice and veg left and that can be my lunch.

OH will shop today but only for the weekend essentials because car is still in the garage, apparently there is something not right with the ABS, the bill is going to be horrendous, over 1000, ow. That is about ten days work for me. Thank goodness for frugality in other areas, something that I have had to develop over the years as OH does not work.

I need to do yet more washing today, though drying it on the line looks a bit doubtful. And a bit of my bugbear, the ironing though there isn't very much, mostly pillowslips.

At least I have done the bathroom and tge kitchen.

Hope everyone has a good day
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • Morning all. Ouch AOD that's going to be some bill for your car. LAMEWOLF I think DH has made the right decision and will not regret it. Enjoy every minute and here's to a long and happy retirement.

We were battered all night by gale force winds and it didn't help with sleeping that the stupid bu**ers across the road had left their wheelie bin at the very bottom of the drive as usual. So that was blown over and rolling around all night and there is now rubbish blowing around everywhere. And do they go round picking it all up - no! They are such a sackless couple! Grrr! Sorry rant over!

I have just got some chicken fillets out to defrost for tonight and am toying with the idea of making a Moroccan tagine recipe I spotted which sounds rather tempting. Will ponder on it.

I did intend popping into town on the bus today as there are various things I want from Poundland. But not sure now whether I can be bothered venturing out in the wind and rain! Feet up in front of the fire with a book sounds a better idea!

Have a good day all (((HUGS))) where wanted/needed. Take care xx

  • Just read back on yesterday's posts and was horrified for Hester daughter, what a situation.
TA it is not even a posh car.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back
  • AOD's comment prompted me to read back too - HESTER I am mortified that someone could act in this way. Surely something can be done about this landlord's behaviour. xx

    Morning everyone.

The weather is foul here. The wind and rain have not let up all night and have only increased in strength. There must have been overnight hail too as there's a small corner of white stuff in the garden. I'm not sure I'd be able to stand up outside without bring blown away. It's just miserable.

All that means that I won't be going out today. There's nothing needed or wanted so it's book reading time. Last night I caught up with Shetland and then got irritated because the final episode isn't for two weeks - bloomin' rugby is on instead. Grrr and double grrr.

Food today is freezer sausages and a pile of veggies. I'm trying to increase my veggie intake and variety. Don't think garden peas every day are enough!

I'm off to select my first book and have my first cup of coffee. I really hope that there's good / better weather elsewhere.

    Happy Saturday everyone.

    Morning all.

I too am horrified at the situation your daughter is in Hester. I hope she can get her money back at the very least....Not sure how to go about it though.

The weekend has started....appointment at the vets at 12. Just a wound check and hoping to know the results of whether the tissue they took away was cancerous. I shall be going alone for this. Hubby doesn't want to know (he can stick his head in the sand as much as he wants but I won't).

Food shopping later....then we will see....

    Onwards and forwards

    Have a great day all

    Morning everyone,

Bit wet and windy here but markedly milder. Still coughing but am definetly starting to fell bit better and my appetite is coming back, had several pieces of GB seasalt choc whilst watching Gogglebox last night :j
DOH went shopping yesterday and I went off to see Bill for a couple of hours which was lovely, didn't feel up to riding yet but did give him a good groom and he had been out in one of the paddocks for six hours. Had to laugh at OH though as I asked him to check one of my tyres while I got changed, have a bit of a slow puncture. When I went out he was running the tyre inflator without the engine on " won't that drain the battery dear " " no, no, it will be fine " got in the car, turned the key and......nothing :rotfl: jump leads dear.

Today will be a bit of tidying up and get some washing on the airers, tea tonight will be sausage casserole and quite possibly more choc!

AOD ouch re the car :(

Take care and have a good day all x

  • Morning all

Ouch AOD, that is some car bill.

DD is viewing another rental house today, we have offered to look after her dogs for 6 months if the landlord won't have them.

She finally got to the bottom of the story at 7:30 last night.

She hired a van from Thursday for a week as they had signed the contracts and she was due to collect the keys at 8:30 Friday morning.

When she arrived at the letting agents she was told that the LL had requested an extra 3 months bank statements from DD and her joint account with her hubby.

DD went home, collected them and took them to the agents, the LL pondered for an hour and then said he wanted 6 months of DD's husbands statements, he does online banking and he was at work, DD had to wait for him to get home from work to print them off.

DD offered to pay 6 months rent up front, over £12000, if this would speed things up, the LL agreed, DD transferred the money to the Letting Agent's account, so it is recoverable.

The LL decided that he would still be worried about any following rollover months, so he still wanted to see the extra bank statements.

DD took her husbands statement to the agents she then sat there until 7:30 in the evening when the LL finally admitted he had someone viewing the property today with a view to buying it so he doesn't want to rent it out until these viewers have seen the place and made a decision!

The property has been on the market for 2 years and is way over priced, but he is happy for DD to rent it if these viewers aren't interested.

DD has now told the agents she's not interested in renting the place as if there was another viewing half way through the 6 month tenancy the LL would no doubt try and throw them out.
    And breathe!

My plans for today include possibly looking after 18 month old DGD if DGS is at football, making sure everything is ready for work on Monday and worrying about DD and her family.

Oh and I may fit in a little crochet in an attempt to keep sane.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Hugs Hester
