To find the profiles - Press Windows key + R or in windows 10 just the Windows key, then type in %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
The profile(s) will be in there.
Your user preferences are stored in there, so your problem may lay within.
I'm not saying that it will be a definitive solution, but, if you've tried all other suggestions, then it's worth a try.

I have also told him to be more careful with what he downloads (and from where)0 -
umm , users/appdata was the HIDDEN folder I told you about that had a temp directory.
try uninstalling firefox , then go to that DIR and delete firefox directory and CLEAN out the temp files from the temp folder
then go back to programme files (or program filesx86) and delete any firefox folders
EMPTY the recycle bin , run the malware programmes then reload firefoxSave a Rachael

He has now rebuilt (refreshed ?) the laptop which has got rid of the problem0 -

Why do people who sound as if they know what they're talking about, only give half the story?
I've just followed your suggestion, but what am I supposed to do when I get there? It's all goobledy gook to me, so why lead me/us so far, then leave us high and dry??
