we have just had a man round r.e fitting our new carpets and he has noticed that the doors are right to the base of the floor so they cant fit any carpet/laminate underneath!
question is as they are fire doors how hard is it to take off as there is the chain that flexes when you open and shut them..thanks.

all doors are fire doors most give 20-30 min protection.
why do you need to take them of as you cant carpet under them anyway. Do you intend to pu tthem back onTHE SHABBY SHABBY FOUNDER0 -

hi not really understanding your reply! if you mean all doors in new builds are fire doors then that's fine! they aren't in our current house! we are unable to carpet the floors due to the doors being so low so this is the reason they need to come off so we can! yes they are going to go back on after they have been trimmed to accomodate the floors..0 -
alright okay
all doors have a fire retardent value to them. Ie shut the door and the fire will be kept behind it for 5-10-15-30 min. even old victorian houses.
does your door have self closing device on it if so remove this first.
look down the side of the door where the hinges are. If all you can see are hinges then just take of door and trim rehang and hey presto.
just a quick note
how is your carpet going to be at the door Are you using a threshold strip or gripper strip or is going down in one contious piece.
some carpets settle after laying and if too much is trimmed of the door you might get a larger gap in timeTHE SHABBY SHABBY FOUNDER0 -

Hi it's definatly a fire door with the chain in the middle between the hinges, this is why i'm not there taking them off as it's not as easy as just unscrewing them! as for the floor it's actually a mix of laminate and carpet throughout the house so all the doors have to come off as wether or not they will settle there is no room at the mo at all...we will re hang them after the floors have been down a while not too bothered about after tbh!!0 -
Hi
Find a carpet fitter who has one of these..... http://www.carpetfittersshoponline.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=108
As you have to do all the doors it would be well worth using this tool, those fire doors are extremely heavy and the little chain closers will have your finger off if you don't watch it, the spring is fierce.

Hi the carpet fitter isnt doing it as he is fitting us in at very short notice also he doesnt really want to do it tbh! how does the chain out of interest allow the door to be taken off? do you know...looks very complicated!!0 -
Hi
One of these? http://www.locksonline.co.uk/acatalog/Reilor_Gibcloser_Concealed_Door_Closer.html
I seem to remember that there is some way of retaining the chain so that when you take out the screws it doesn't spring back and have your finger.
Take off a door and then see if you fancy trying the aforementioned tool.!!
Good luck

You can remove them. Jam a nail into the chain and then undo the screws that hold the end of the chain to the frame.
Then saw/plane however much you need off the bottom for the carpet to clear and put them back on.Happy chappy0 -
