Pull your socks up, Argos

Options
Bad form for Argos to email a chap to say the ordered goods have been delivered to the appropriate store - only to have one's lunch hour wasted travelling to and queuing at said store for the privilege of being informed in person that the goods are not there.

Gave up at this point and ordered from Amazon instead - much as this goes against the grain due to their shady tax practices and less than stellar treatment of employees.

Glad to see you're a person with principles then.

I have no issue with Amazon's tax affairs, they just follow the rules set in front of them.

It's entirely possible that the delivery arrived BUT had not yet been processed - that's not unusual with many retailers these days, especially if in Argos' case it can be a sizeable delivery.

This is quite a comical post in fairness!

Upon looking at Argos' website, I can see that a lot of stores are open similar to this:

    Mon 09:00-20:00
    Tue 09:00-20:00
    Wed 09:00-20:00
    TODAY Thu 09:00-20:00
    Fri 09:00-20:00
    Sat 09:00-18:00
    Sun 10:00-16:00

(10 random selections = all open Monday to Sunday)

So there was no need to "waste" your lunch hour on collecting the item, as you don't work 7 days a week for 9+ hours.

Unless your item fits through the postbox (very unlikely - may need signing for even if small), you still have to be available to collect said package (though I can appreciate that you can arrange the time) and the delivery date is probably the same as the date you could collect the Argos item! So you've probably gained no advantage in purchasing on Amazon. This doesn't count the fact that you now have two items purchased and have to clean up that issue (more time and maybe money?).

To mention ethics in regards to Amazon's practices is just low in this situation! Either don't mention them, or don't order from them (EVER). Simples.

What do Argos's opening hours have to do with anything? They'd still have wasted their time whenever they went; they'd just have wasted their morning / afternoon / after work etc.

I fail to see how the fact they could have gone some other time makes any difference whatsoever - OP didn't know it wasn't available until they got there, otherwise clearly they wouldn't have gone.
  • Indeed TR - also one was only provided with a time slot of after 4pm on Tuesday or all day on Wednesday within which to pay for and receive the "delivered" goods.
As an update - said chattels have now been gratefully received from Amazon and child number two is once again a contented gamer.

Ah I'm not actually going to argue. Good job for getting it all resolved OP
  • Not to (re)start an argument Daytona0, but although one finds some of Amazon's practices a tad off-putting, somewhat hypercritically convenience has won out over the slightly bad taste that their use leaves. As a meagre defence, an attempt was made to avoid their use in the first place.

As a potential analogy, from what one has read, the practices of much of the meat industry are unpleasant to me, but one chooses to turn a blind eye and continue to eat meat. Having said this, making the effort to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle is becoming increasingly attractive - especially when one considers the environmental damage on top of the suffering of many of the animals during the meat production process.

Apologies if the analogy has turned a somewhat light-hearted rant towards a more serious bent. One wonders what Amazon would need to do to tip the balance and for their use to become too repugnant to consider even with the convenience factored in!

At this point it begs the question, do you have zero games shops in your local area or was it something highly specialised?
