I paid £25k deposit for my Merc last month. They had to call and after a few security questions it was no problem.

Was it easy security questions like DOB, address, etc.., and not hardcquestions like transactions made on this date along with amount and place, date account opened, current balance, etc...?

It's good to see that the dealer makes the call to the bank, then pass it onto you to speak. At least you didn't need to waste mobile phone credit.

Hopefully the call centre isn't busy as you could be on hold for a long time. Did it happen t you?

Most CC providers offer free 0800 numbers nowadays. Others offer geographical numbers that are either included in your allowance or shouldn't cost you more than 3p/min if you are on pure PAYG.

Back in 2007, we bought a new car, £36k paid by debit card in showroom, went straight through, very surprised there was no additional check made!

Following year we bought a caravan, £16k, had to talk to bank on phone to confirm it was a correct transaction. Can't remember now what they asked.

Both paid from a Halifax account.

I paid around £7500 on my Nationwide debit card to a big dealership. I didn't tell them in advance and the transaction went through straight away, no problems.

You seem to be assuming it'll be declined but it might not!

why not telephone the card issuer to put them on alert of the large transaction?

i would be trying to find a way of getting onto a creditcard instead.. Amex Cashback if i possibly could. with Barclaycard Cashback as the next best. the devious may even 'want' a debit card transaction to fail:think:

Unless the cashback is higher than the charge that the dealer will levy on a credit card transaction there seems little point in attempting this. Plus getting such a card with a high enough limit may be tricky.
