why not telephone the card issuer to put them on alert of the large transaction?

Waste of time, it's unlikely that any card issuer will have a system in place to record such an alert.

As others have said, it'll either go through fine (mine for just over £10K in November did) or it'll get declined and a phone call will be needed to get it released. Either way it should go through on the day and you can happily drive away.

Nearly the same as Forever - transaction failed, although with the complication that the funds had been earmarked, so subsequent atempt declined.
Had to phone the bank from the showroom, but it did all get sorted.

I paid £500 deposit on a credit card and then the dealer asked for a bank transfer. Large franchised dealer - the car was ready and present on their premises, so I did it. Transferred the money by faster payment, they checked it had gone through and handed over the car two hours later.

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to see different situations happening and the payment getting through.

When I pay the remaining amount by debit card, and got declined, then I call the bank so that payment gets released/proccessed, would I get the normal security questions? Or hard questions? Should the dealer call the bank and then pass the call to me?

I think I might query with the dealer to see if a bank transfer is possible. I am purchasing the car througha a large franchised dealer too. At least there is a less chance of the transaction being blocked, as when I do it through online banking I will have a card reader to authorise the transaction.

On the day of the car collection, did you do the transfer at home or in the franchised dealer's place using your moible app?

I did the transfer from my computer at home. Then went to the garage to collect the car. Garage is less than 10 minutes away. I didn't have an app for that account but could access it through the browser on my phone.

I bought my last car in 2009, £7600, paid for it on debit card and it went through fine.

I paid £25k deposit for my Merc last month. They had to call and after a few security questions it was no problem.

Similar to others I paid around £7000 for a car and had to authorise by phone. Making a much larger payment (around £20000) a couple of years later I popped into the bank (Natwest) to tell them it would be coming out and it went straight through with no problems.
