O'neill Patient - really that bad?

I read few threads about this solicitor firm being terrible... are they really that bad or some good stories?

I have received other quotes so they are not overly competitive.. should I really avoid avoid?

I'll be interested to see answers on this one as well, they were the recommended conveyancer for me through London & Country, I was scared off by the reviews online and just paid more for a solicitor I had recommended (although finding one on the lender's panel wasn't too easy in my case)

If they are not overly competitive and you've only seen bad things being reported why are you even entertaining them?

  • I used O'Neill Patient when I bought my first house last year. They weren't brilliant but they weren't terrible either. They didn't mess anything up, got everything done on time and were a few hundred pounds cheaper than any of my local solicitors. But on the down side, it was almost impossible to get hold of anyone to speak to when we had updates etc, our case handler was never in the office when we phoned and never returned our calls, although did reply to emails quite quickly.
If I was buying again I would pay the extra to use a local solicitor, purely because they would be easier to communicate with than someone in a call centre hundreds of miles away.
  • The EA gave me the details of the solicitor of the seller (usually I would not use them) and when I called them they are roughly the same price as O'neill and even though I mentioned that the seller was using them, they sounded pretty distant!

I would like to complete in 6 weeks but I doubt I will be able to!

I'm using them for a remortgage, but only because the lender appointed them and is paying their fee (except for a couple of extra items due to the fact that it's leasehold and the freeholder has a restriction on the title). All seems to be going OK, although I haven't tried to phone them so far. I don't think I'd use them for a purchase though - after all, if they mess up the remortgage the worst that will happen is that we stick with our existing lender for a bit longer.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
  • Type the name into Google and you can see the reviews aren't brilliant. I suspect there will be much better out there. Have a search around for some local solicitors and pick one with decent reviews. They maybe a little more expensive, but as the saying goes, if you pay peanuts you will get monkeys.
  • that's the thing, they're not paid peanuts... they charge pretty much the same.
I received a quote from another solicitor which was much cheaper and their reviews seemed way better... I don't know any so it's all a bit of just reading reviews and guess work
