Car rust spot repair cost?
Have got a 2013 Hyundai i10 - unfortunately about a year ago something fell on the roof and chipped the paint, i now have a tiny (perhaps 3mm round) rust spot on the roof. The dealer says its will need a whole roof respray and couldn't give a price as they farm it out to a bodyshop, anyone know what sort of price would be reasonable to get it fixed before it gets any worse?

Get you battery power drill, a cup brush and then take the paint back to metal at the point of rust + 50%, clean and then paint the area with rust inhibitor (I prefer Hydrate 80).
This will at least cover the area and prevent rust spreading.
Later, seeing as it's the roof, find your cars paint code and get a rattle can. Any difference in colour will be negligible on an area like the roof, so no real need to paint the whole thing or spend to much time blending.
Effectively what's the worse than can happen? Mess it up and it'll need the whole roof doing, which is what you've been told anyway.
As for the dealer, they probably put 150-200% on top of what the body shop would have charged them.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

On some old banger, maybe, but using a power drill with a wire brush attachment and then blowing it over with a rattle can??0 -

If you want to protect it in the meantime - for a 3mm rust mark - scrape the rust and dislodged paint off with a sharp knife, put a spot of rust eater on it, and touch it in with a tiny brush with a touch up pen from, ideally, your local dealer or halford if you must.
Please dont take to it with a drill and a rattle can :eek:0 -

You make a right balls of a 3 year old car?0 -
Take it to a smart repairer. I just had my civic bumper done some @rse hit my parked car last week outside the house and scrapped the plastic and paint, it costs me £130 this was from a dealer who gets a chap in to do repairs. He did a great job you would see any marks if done right
Would do that if car was newish or decent car.0 -
Have just spoken to the recommended body repair shop who say it will need looking at but may need the whole roof panel to be replaced! To be fair he also said that if it is not a warranty job, which it isn't, then they may just be able to repair it but would not be able to offer a guarantee on the work as rust can be a bit insidious.
Will certainly not be going down the new panel route, worst comes to worst I'll do a bodge job on it myself and t-cut the paint in!
Can't believe such a tiny mark can cause so much trouble!Mortgage free!

It's a pity you didn't treat it a year ago when first chipped. Your best bet is to carefully scrape off the rust with the end of a needle file or rolled-up wet n'dry sanding paper, then blob some primer onto it (I have used smoothrite for this as it can be painted onto rusty areas; choose a colour closest to the final one), then use a touch up stick or spray some matching paint into a lid and apply with a fine brush in several coats.
I wouldn't try spraying it and t-cutting; you will end up with an area that looks naff far exceeding 3mm diameter if you go down that route.0 -
Yeah, I knew it should have been done but it is the wife's car and getting her to sort stuff is a nightmare, of course now it becomes my job to sort out and pay for!Mortgage free!

If it's only 3mm and the rust is only on the surface (not eaten through) then this isn't far off a permanent solution. I have had bigger stone chips on the bonnet of my current car which I did this for and the rust hasn't re-appeared.
The body shop will get the roof back to show room condition so nobody can see the repair. But this is a money saving forum and you have to ask is a 3mm chip really that noticeable or important.0
