Disconnection error

My parents use Talk Talk as their landline and broadband supplier. Recently, there was a misunderstanding. My Mother wanted to return the TV box, but the customer service person at Talk Talk cut her off and disconnected them instead.
When I spoke to various people at Talk Talk, they told me that my parents' would loose their telephone number that they have had for 44 years. Unbelievable!
I'm still searching for a supplier who can get their telephone number reinstated.

The phone number won't be reissued for some time (for exactly these kind of situations), so you do have a chance to get it back. You "just" need to persuade TalkTalk that they made a mistake and need to rectify it. I don't think any other supplier will be able to fix the issue as they probably won't be able to undo TalkTalk's actions.

I had a vaguely similar problem years ago with O2 (complicated by the fact I had three O2 accounts and needed paperwork to claim cashback). Eventually I got it sorted, but that was after I hit a brick wall and resorted to calling them every hour on the hour (on an 0800 number) for two weeks until they sorted it out. It was hard work.

Have you followed TalkTalk's complaint escalation procedure?

This. No other provider will be able to just cherry pick a number like that. If you have no number to port (which has to be associated with a live service), you have to use a number that is within the ranges Ofcom have allocated that provider.

TalkTalk might be able to do something to get the number back, but it will be a very manual, labour-intensive process on their end so you will have to fight for it to be done.
