Saving in secret

  • Empathise with your situation and wonder if a bit of lateral thinking may help..... (There are probably other companies offering the same system but my knowledge is re. Avon so can only really speak about them.) Some Avon reps are 'personal shoppers' (no need to walk the streets and, incidentally, it's one of the easiest ways to build up your credit score) and most are offered credit accounts i.e. normally the rep owes Avon money but there's nothing to stop you putting the account in credit and then request a refund as/when you leave. To the best of my knowledge (I can double check for you if you wish) Avon only communicate with reps via email.

PM me if you think that may help or you'd like to know more.

    Either way, good luck!

Hi, I'm a retired postie. At my delivery office we used to hold mail for customers to collect from the callers office. I think you just have to write to the office manager to arrange this. It may have changed a little but worth asking, I've been left 2 yrs now so not sure about current procedure.

Hi, just a thought. How about a Paypal account? Ok, it's not exactly a saving/bank account but it is somewhere to hold your money (in secret) and you can open and operate it totally paperless. Of course you won't get any interest for your money but if it's just a safe place for your money you are looking for, it may fit the bill.

You could contact Women's Aid for advice on how to handle bank accounts and correspondence in your situation. I'm sure it will be something they will have need to have addressed before.

How did you determine the OP was female? Is there a "Man's Aid"?

  • Not 100% guarantee, but I had problems with my post being delivered at a different address, and my bank put a hold on my post and I went into my branch to collect it. Your bank may be able to do something similar.

I understand you have concerns about leaving the relationship without money, but think about what you can do to leave the relationship as soon as possible. For example could you ask your work to pay you by cheque so that your pay isn't going into the bank account you've lost control of and then open a new one when you have left and are somewhere safe. There are shelters you can go to so that you are safe and can start to take control of your finances.

If your abuser/ex/partner is accessing accounts in your name this is fraud. If you can speak to your bank and explain this they may be able to freeze the accounts so that no money can be withdrawn from the accounts until you have sole access and are somewhere safe.

Do you have a trusted friend or family who can help you get away and use their address to set up new accounts? People will help you if they know that you need it.
  • Thank you to everyone for your advice, I will look into perhaps a post office account and speak to my bank about keeping hold of mail.
