Saving in secret

Hi
I am hoping to leave a very bad relationship however I need money to do so. I have my own job and bank account however, due to the nature of my relationship, I am unable to have control over my money. I have terrible credit and I have looked into prepaid debit cards etc however I am worried that paperwork/correspondence will arrive at my house (even a 'hi welcome to the company' type letter.) Is there any way I can have a totally online account somewhere? Something which will not send me any letters and I can save enough money for the next stage of my life?
Thanks

A bit risky, but perhaps you could open an online account using the name and address of, say, a sister (with her permission) but with you retaining the password for the account. Can't say I'd recommend it though.

any account you open online will send wriiten confirmation. Try going into a bank and tell them what you need.Maybe use your name and see if they will accept the address of a relative.

Log into your current online bank and look through the other accounts on offer, some online saver accounts don't send a bank card, you can also opt for paperless banking, although I'm unsure if they would still send a welcome letter.

You could contact Women's Aid for advice on how to handle bank accounts and correspondence in your situation. I'm sure it will be something they will have need to have addressed before.

  • Thanks for your replies everyone, I struggle to speak to the bank as they've removed the local branch and I have no good reason to go into the city to get to the nearest one. I'll see if I can find a number to speak to.

I fear that any account with a financial institution could result in mail arriving. Even if opting out of statements and marketing I believe there are some notifications that will be sent to the registered address of the account holder. Change of FSCS limits? Building Society mergers? Notification of branch closures?

A joint account with a trusted person that requires both signatures? It may be that communications are intended only to be sent to the first named account holder but mistakes happen.

If an account earns interest there may be the potential for communications with HMRC giving the game away.

You are assuming that the OP is female. There are some men who are controlled by their partners.

True but a shelter would give them advice in any event.

they ahve an online saver. If you go in, you could ask them to hold the paperwork there for collection. So you could make sure it was all runnng properly then go paperless.
