Am I missing something? 3 and data roaming

I have reached the end of current contract, so was looking around.

Not especially unhappy with current provider (Tesco) but I noticed 3's Feel at home. As I travel quite often to Dublin, and occasionally other EU destinations and the US, this has appeal. It would be handy to use the data allowance when I want to Google etc if I am out somewhere.(I don't make many calls)

This offer seems pretty unbeatable - but am I missing another provider offering the same or better? Can't find anyone with anything even approaching it.

No, you aren't, but reportedly, data connection speed is very low in many countries.
  • I used it in Luosto, Finland all last week with no problems at all. I had good data speed & connection all the time.

Bit surprised the other majors aren't offering anythjng similar - there must be a significant number of folk travelling about the EE regularly?

Nothing surprising. Traditionally overpriced roaming is one of the main cash cows.
  • I am with Three and as far as I am aware the 'Feel At Home' is only on the calls and texts been the same price as home. Data is still chargeable. I have had a recent trip to Bruges and they do a £5 Euro pass for the day that gives you unlimited data until midnight that night. I then received a message saying I have used £14 worth of data....currently under investigation LOL so just double check

    From Three's website:

    "What's included?
All calls and texts to UK numbers (within your standard allowance).
All your data usage (within your allowance)."

Belgium is not a 'Feel At Home' destination.
The Republic of Ireland and the US are.

Have a look on ID mobile they run on the Three network but owned by the carphonewarehouse.

    http://www.idmobile.co.uk/

We've just added Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Finland, Lithuania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

This is in addition to the existing list of countries:

Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Spain, Sweden and USA.

So when you're in any one of these countries, you'll be able to use your data, and make calls or send texts to UK mobile numbers and landlines.

Calls to foreign numbers (even when you're in the same country) aren't included.

3s version is pretty much universal across all their tariffs but the iD version only applies to a limited selection of theirs.

As Grumbler mentioned, data rates (at least in the Costa Blanca region of Spain) are very variable.Myself and my OH both have iPhones and use data to send/receive iMessages between ourselves. She is currently in Spain on a monthly basis and we notice how long it takes to send a simple text based message via data. It seems to get there eventually, but the data rate is often just a trickle. Yet at times we've had typical 3G data rates of 8 Mb/s or so. Phone calls to/from the UK are fine, it's just data that's hit and miss.

Most of the other networks offer EU roaming as a quite expensive add-on and usually don't include much data. From the summer of 2017 EU roaming charges are being scrapped, but quite how the networks offer it is another matter :rotfl:
