Did changing to BT sport Lite renew my contract

I moved from BT Infinity to Sky Broadband on February 2nd as far as I was aware my contract finished on Jan 28th.

I have just received my final Bill with a £80 charge for apparently transferring while still in contract.

On phoning them up I was told that apparently switching to the BT Sport Lite in June last year (when they introduced the charge) put me into a new 12 month contract.

I don't remember anything about there being anything a new contract when switching and I would have cancelled if I was aware.

I was hoping someone could confirm this for me and if possible post the email they were sent when the changes were to take place.

Thank you for your help.

  • If all you did was downgrade when BT Sport began their £5 charge for their service last year, you should not have started a new contract.

Ring them up and tell them this. If you have difficulty making them understand this, then ask to speak to a supervisor.

    Thank you papa smurf.

That's confirms what I thought but couldn't find the best email to check the small print.

I have even had one of the agents tell I wouldn't have anything to pay when I queried an email they sent me earlier advising me of possible charges. Was told to wait for final bill.

I tried clearing this up in the morning but spoke but Indian call centre agent insisted charge was correct.

Will try calling again when I finish work.
  • Could be wrong but seem to recall there was something about being automatically enrolled into BT Sport Lite (and a new contract) unless you opted out. Think Martin even raised this on one of his TV slots.

I'm sure my email said that I would automatically be moved to the paid package unless I manually opt for the lite package but can't remember anything about being locked in another 12months.

This was why I was trying to find a copy of the email to see if there's anything in there before I complain.

You could be right but I'm with BT and from experience every time I move home or make any changes to my package at all it locks me into another contract. Will see if I can find my paperwork and let you know if I come across anything useful for you.

Yes, you are right - found the letter, which states: "If you do nothing, your BT Sport Pack will cost £5 a month from 1 August 2015." That was the opting out issue I recalled.

At the bottom of the letter it also quotes: "If you want to end your BT Sport subscription, you need to contact us by 31 July 2015. See bt.com/legalstuff for details."

Hopefully the 'legalstuff' link will help.

  • This is the address contained in the BT email informing customers about BT Sports Lite, for them to click if they want to downgrade:

    http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/manage/bt-sport/od-hub.html?s_cid=con_email_zone_UCLcell16_CTA1_20150512_seg6

That's what I used to downgrade and I didn't get into another contract (not for that anyway but I did get a new 12 month contract when I got a less than half price deal on broadband, which they told me about).

I'd just like to confirm what poppasmurf has told you :- switching to BT Sport lite did not require a new renewal of contract, so what you have been told is wrong/a mistake.

Just to update, I've tried making several calls and a webchat but not having much luck.

All the agents tell me downgrading definitely put me into another contract.

One agent actually insisted that there were no options that didn't start a new contract other the canceling complety and they wouldn't tale my complaint because I opted out online instead of doing it on the phone.

Now have to consider my next step as I refuse to pay £80 for something I'm not using.

Time to bring in the big guns.
