  • I know of 2 July birthdays who got 120 and a September who got 121. Possibly your child just didn't perform as well on the day. 109 is a great score though and she should be very proud. I know I told my son just to do his best and not focus on a standardised score as he had absolutely no control over it. I told him the only thing he could do was to do his best and hope that would be enough to get his 1st choice school. That worked for us but I know many of his friends and their parents that just fixated on a score and feel let down with the result even though they've done well. Perhaps when you get the raw score it may shed some light on the situation and make you feel a bit better about the whole thing. My son has a June birthday and I am going to request his raw scores too as I want to see how he did in comparison to his practice papers. He averaged 94% over all 21 papers and he got 123.
  • Hi there,

Yip you're probably right, she probably just underperformed a wee bit on the day due to nerves or whatever but it is still a great score. It's only her reaction that upset us. Hopefully when she gets her school in May, it will be smiles all round. Great score from your wee one.
  • I honestly wish they had just received a grade. This scoring system causes so much division amongst the children and parents.

My kids have done GL and both got an A which is all that matters for the schools they chose....but that doesn't stop nosey parents and kids wanting to judge 'how good an A' it was by asking what the cohort percentile was....both mine were told that they weren't to tell anyone the percentile and we would never dream about asking others.
  • Can I just ask what your children were getting in practice papers in P6 (rough percentage would be great please!)

Our school has recently started to do a test a week. It's GL that we will be sitting. My P6 is getting between 50-70% on his, is this enough given that he has 8 months to get more experience?
  • You have LOADS of time from now in P.6 until the actual tests, please don't fret about scores now. As a general rule of thumb, you will know roughly how they are going to do by the very end of P.6 and with both my children I liked to see a score of 80% consistently.

  • Thanks, I'm not fretting (too much!) but they're a competitive class and
he was disappointed himself with the 50% paper. He's bright but he got a real shock.
  • Have you had parent teacher meeting yet? Our P.6 teacher was a fab teacher and they can tell you how they doing/where they need to be.

  • Their teacher has been off on extended sick leave since the new year. The class have been given a newly qualified sub teacher some days or it would appear, any other person who can stand in the room with them for an hour, yesterday it was the school caretaker. You couldn't make it up!

So that's why i'm trying to work out what he needs to be getting and how I can help him get there. It's definitely tougher than I thought it would be.
  • You are very lucky your p6 has started tests! My p6 son hasn't started any yet. Having been through this before I'm not too concerned yet. Your child's scores are good at this stage and you have loads of time to climb.
