Lied to the police & worried sick :(

This will be long, sorry!

Over 3 years ago I got a note through the door from a detective addressed to 'the occupants of' and then my address, asking to ring the number on the note. It was a local number rather than a police number. There was a long reference number.

When I rang it I was asked for my name straight away and I was told (from what I remember) :

* they couldn't tell me what it was about
* they said it wasn't my name they had
* it wasn't my mothers name they had (only other person who lives/has ever lived with me)
* it was about something that happened in 2009/2010
* it wasn't anything to worry about
* it 'might not have anything to do' with me or my mum
* the case had been handed over to her from a different unit

I was asked questions like how long I've lived in my house, who else lives here, my age etc. With them saying that the thing they wanted to talk about happening in 2009/2010 I automatically said we didn't live in the house during this time which wasn't true, at which point they began asking about past occupants.

I then told them that I had lied about how long I had lived here and they said they wanted to come to my house the next day to talk to me. Then I got really worried as I knew I'd be in the house alone, so said that I wasn't sure how long we'd lived here but it was later than that time. The detective then said they'd continue with their investigation and that was that. The whole phone call was about 15 minutes long, mainly me trying to find out what it was about. She never identified her self, cautioned me or anything like that.

I know the fact that I lied makes me sound incredibly dodgy/guilty but I was confused and have suffered from extreme anxiety, depression, social anxiety since I was about 11 so when I was told they wanted to talk to me in person when I'd be alone all day really scared me! I was 21 at the time and I'm female and vulnerable, I was/am on medication for depression, don't really have much social interaction with others due to my mental health. I don't have links to any criminals and all of my family are very middle class and law abiding so I doubt it's about them.

I was quite concerned about who I was talking to as like I said it was a local number and I wasn't sure if it was a scam as it was all so secretive and out of the blue.

This happened over three years ago now and since then we've not heard anything from this detective. Neither me or my mum can think what it is about.

Since then, for the past three years I've noticed some really odd things going on. I'm not sure if it's just paranoia due to my anxiety but here are some examples:
* cars parked opposite my house, empty
* I've seen one car in the same spot with a man inside, another car with another man inside at the back of my house, a car at the side of my house (there is like a little car park for two cars here so it was odd how it was practically against my wall!)
* a car parked outside a family members house who I was visiting with a woman inside with a notepad. (2014) Apparently she drove off after we left
* calls from an unknown number/withheld number which always goes silent which we never used to g
* a large land rover parked outside my front door which drove off when I walked past the door (only happened once)
This isn't as noticeable anymore but now and again a strange car will turn up and keep parking somewhere near my house but i never see anyone get in or out.

I do live in a little culde sack and it's quite cramped with people parking their cars because there isn't many double drive ways but there's often a different car in the same spot every few weeks.
et

We've had the police around a few times since, where we have reported crimes (as some local older teenagers were damaging our and our neighbors property) and it has never been mentioned to us about the detective.

Both me and my mum have had CRB checks for work (enhanced ones) since it happened which came back clear.

To be honest this all did slip my mind for a good year or so while I was working but as soon as I lost my job due to health reasons I became obsessed with it again and get worried about different cars, knocks on the door etc to the point where my hair has been falling out, for a 24 year old woman this is devastating and making my anxiety worse.

I've discussed this with my mum and her view is that if they want to talk they'll come back which like I said they haven't. I feel that this is something added to a long list of things in my life that's unresolved.

I'm too scared to contact the police to ask if it was genuine or if not to tell them about it being a scam with it being over three years. I've had counselling about stuff but never mentioned this because I'm worried it comes across like I am guilty :(

So basically my questions are..
* do you think this was real police?
* will I get in trouble for lying if it was?
* should I forget about it or try to resolve it (or will this make it worse?)

If i got a card through the door like that i don't think i would have even contacted them, i certainly wouldn't answer questions about myself to someone i didn't know.

  • I wish I'd never contacted them tbh! It's made me paranoid it was either the actual police who are now stalking me or a burglar / stalker :(

I'm not sure what advice could be given that wasn't already covered in your previous thread - and it seems from posts that there were multiple threads before then as well. Did you take any of the suggestions already given and what was the outcome?
  • Nothing has changed, haven't heard a thing since but thank you for linking that I will have a read and see if it brings back any memories of what was said x

So why didn't you just find your own post and add to that? What different advice do you expect by starting an exact same thread?

I honestly do not mean this with any malice and understand you're obviously you're an anxious person - but my good look into freelance writing/e-book publishing and possibly turning what you posted into some sort of thriller...

Guilt can do awful things to your mind. I think your best bet is to visit a police station to talk it through with them in detail.

Get it all thrashed out, so they can assure you that you being confused/elusive back then won't matter and nobody's watching you.

For what it's worth, I'd have not answered their questions at all and I'd have either lied, or offered to go to a police station to answer stuff as I don't do business over the telephone as I get confused too quickly and am not entirely sure what I'm being asked or why.

Go on, go see plod. Get it all ironed out.

You've done nothing "wrong". They won't arrest you. You'll come out of there having had a bit of a laugh with them .... as you realise you were being a bit daft and there's nothing to worry about.

If there are odd cars, you'll probably find it's the lad up the road who is dealing stuff he shouldn't.... it's not you they're loitering for.
