Barclaycard stopping Mastercard

Just got a letter to say that they're closing the Barclaycard Platinum Mastercard and replacing it with a Barclaycard Platinum Visa card. (no choice from Apr 2016 Barclaycard Mastercard will not longer exist).

I have already got a Barclaycard Visa card and use one for online and one for others.

It's also useful to have a Visa and a Mastercard in case one system doesn't work.

Now can I transfer to another Mastercard provider taking the credit limit with me?

I don't believe you can transfer and take the credit limit with you, but nothing to stop you applying for a Mastercard elsewhere.
  • I've built up a large credit limit so getting a new Mastercard would have a much lower limit as I'm now retired
  • Limits are down to each lender. However, you may increase your chances of getting a high limit if you were to cancel or at least reduce the limit on the one you're planning to close.

Visa and Mastercard don't offer limits, the card issuer does that.

Interesting. It often feels to me like new lenders will look at existing credit limits and offer something similar.
I'd have said, then, that reducing a limit or closing a card with a big limit would reduce the chance of getting a decent limit from a new lender.

Do you have a decent limit on your Barclaycard Visa?
If not, Barclaycard may be happy to transfer your limit from the Mastercard to the Visa. Or at least use your "good customer" status built up on your Mastercard towards reviewing your Visa limit.

Then if you use your Barclaycard Visa as your main card, presumably the new Mastercard that you get won't need a decent limit as it will only be used when Visa fails.

It's a theory, and not one I'd entirely discount.

But I tend towards the 'blimey, this person currently has x thousand pounds of available credit, what would happen if they maxed it out, as well as anything we might give them?' school of thought.

But there's no definitive answer either way.

I wonder if that's the same 20 month Platinum VISA the Barclays Eligibility Check gave me a "probably, maybe" on. I actually didn't proceed due to the design of the card - I would have to wear sunglasses when I looked at it. I have enough in that respect with my Aqua card.

I'd say the only way to transfer to a different Mastercard with a different issuer with the same credit limit is with a BT card. You would probably have to speak with them to arrange it. Some card applications include a space to request a credit limit but in my experience that's just ignored.

I don't see what's wrong with VISA though. Barclays will probably transfer your limit to the new VISA card in due course.

I would do what JimmyTheWig suggests and use the new Mastercard as a back up to your Barclays VISA. I fully agree with you that it's sensible to have at least one of both, and I would never travel abroad without that combination, but there's no need to use both equally.

business has done the opposite they are now mastercard
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
