One day I was so ill I couldn't walk and had to receive help from hotel staff in getting back to my room. Once home, three - four weeks of diarrhoea and stomach cramps, three visits to doctor at home including tests. It was a bug picked up at the hotel, as I was in a resort in which I didn't leave the hotel, and there are plenty of reviews on Trip Advisor from other people suffering similar bugs and complaining about the dirty conditions.

Norovirus can be widespread in these types of places where people are all in one place...you can read about outbreaks on cruiseships etc where all it needs is one passenger to not wash their hands properly and eat from the buffet etc to spread it round quickly
I have been to India a couple of times. Hand sanitiser and probiotics and was fine the whole time. I thought Egypt was a place like India that, without taking precautions you are more or less guaranteed to be unwell.
I seriously doubt you will be able to make any claim directly from the hotel, what has your travel insurance covered? did you not leave the hotel to seek medical attention or did a doctor come to you?
  • The only way you would get any compensation is you can prove the resort was negligent. So if there was a major outbreak of food poisoning then you would have grounds for a complaint. If only one or two people are affected then it is more likely you have caught a bug from someone through direct or indirect contact, and the only negligence may have been an infected person failing to wash their hands after a trip to the loo leaving traces of bug infected poo on something you came into contact with.

    OP a few questions:

    1. Did you get a doctor's report whilst you were ill on holiday?

    2. Did you incur any financial loss as a result of the illness?

    3. Have you notified your travel insurer (ideally at the time of illness)?

If all the above are no then you won't get much luck from travel insurance.

Final question - if you knew the tripadvisor reviews were so bad why did you go there?!!

Thanks very much for your helpful comment, I'll be sure to inform my husband of his place in society.

in light of all the other responses have you done this yet?
