DVD Recorder picture quality

I have Argos' £99.99 DVD recorder - Alba RDVD 1001 - have plugged it in and my BBC1 & 2 pictures have thin black and white diagonal lines streaming across the screen. What can I do? (I've got 8 days left or I take it back). It plays prerecorded DVDs fine - it's just when I watch TV whilst DVD recorder is on the picture quality is rubbish.

Also, it's a DVD +RW. I thought this meant I could record & record over - it seems once you've recorded once it's there for good. Is this correct?

Please help if you can.

I don't know what your problem is, but I'd suggest that you bring it back. This one may be better - http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/Product.aspx?ARA=Special+Offers&CAT=Special+Offers&SCT=Audio+%26+TV&PRT=DVD+Players&Type=SKU&Id=230205848

OK it's £50 more, but you get an extra year's guarantee and it's multi format.

It's the same price in store and you can order over the phone and get it delivered for nought.

I'd tune the dvd recorder in to get shut of the lines that ruin the picture.
Look for the RF channel and try to reset that first.
The machine you have is fine and I'd not bother wasting anymore cash on another one.

this is one of many topics I've seen on various forums about thsi recorder, others included issues finalizing discs, issues playing discs, issues with compression, issues with attaching camcorders etc.

I'd suggest the machine may not be fine and paying £40/50 for a more 'reliable' make may make perfect sense

I would take it back and get Currys/ Dixons own make matsui DVD recorder. It's only £99 and is brilliant for the money. Simple to set up and is slim line and looks really modern.

I bought it to replace my Matsui VHS, which lasted 11 years !! Cant complain with that, I just couldnt bothered getting it fixed.

  • Just last week I bought the 4Kus from Asda, easy to set up, good easy guider function for recording and finalising disks. Looks much better than the picture on the box. An absolute bargain for £100. Only draw back is it only records onto DVD+. yer pays yer money. etc.

ps. forgot to say 4 stars in What HiFi

I also bought the Asda badged 4kus which is actually a Liteon.

Can't complain and is very good for the money so far - who cares if it only records onto DVD + R and R/W's - they will play on almost any new DVD player esp. the ones you get for 20quid

I have reviewed it somewhere else in this forum if you can be bothered looking for it.

Never liked the LiteOns in fairness -- and I think their DVD-ROM drives and CD writers (although not DVD burners) for PCs are among the best on the market.

This is one area where cheap is not usually cheerful. A good quality Panasonic or Pioneer is the way to go IMO.

Panasonic or Pioneer is the way to go.

I have two Panasonic's simply because for the money they are excellent machines.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
