Under the Stairs Nook

I want to do something along the lines of this:-
http://www.decorhomeideasbest.com/15-gorgeous-stairs-nooks-dream/
Basically under the stairs sofa that we can go to if we want to read or something.
I have no clue where to start. Do I contact a builder, interior designer, architect?
And has anyone done this and know roughly how much it would cost. At the moment, it is just empty space under my stairs. I know a lot would depend on furnishings and finishings, but I want to know if it's a pipedream because if it's going to cost thousands, I probably won't do it!

Looks like something you could create yourself by getting some lacquered MDF cut to size to make a box to infill the 'nook' then either procure or make a cushion sized to put on top of it. If you're not up to the challenge a good chippie or handyman should be up to the challenge.
I'd consider making the top removable so you can use the interior of the "sofa" as storage.0 -

My dad might be up to the challenge. But not sure how good it would look
Like the idea of storage in the sofa. I was going to see if I could put drawers in, but a liftable top sounds easier.
So handyman or carpenter is the ones I should be looking for. Thank you.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

Yes, I imagine that's what's under most people's stairs, it is mine. I'm sure it would be the most practical use of the space, but it does depend on what space the OP has already.Tigsteroonie wrote: »Really? Ours is your typical cupboard-under-the-stairs - coats, shoes, bags for life, hoover ...0 -
Pollyanna - no idea where you are but it you post to let us know whereabouts you are someone may be able to recommend someone. I certainly do but the chances of you living near me would be low.Thrifty Till 50 Then Spend Till the End

For most - and most houses - the cost of doing it will outweigh the lifestyle/benefits you can get from it. It's something to ooh and aah at for the majority.
Have you measured it? It might fit perfectly a regular bed size, so you just have to buy a divan and get somebody to "stick fancier fronts on the drawers" and "cut a bookcase into the end bit". There are some shorter beds etc available for sale. Who knows, you might be lucky and find a seller of shorter/narrower beds, or caravan bed suppliers. If you can start with a carcass of the right size it'd dramatically drop the price.
Then, would you want the lighting exactly as it is there? That'd be another man (and carpets up above to get at it).0 -

This is a brilliant idea. There are still some "made to measure" sofa companies knocking around as well, maybe worth approaching them for something that would "slot in" and would be very comfortable.0 -
No I don't necessarily want it exactly as the picture, but in case people didn't get what I was talking about, I posted a link.
At the moment, there are coats and shoes under my stairs, but my brother is moving out and so a heap of stuff will be going.
Just me and my two little girls will be living there.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

There's such an amount of carpentry there that it would be simpler and cheaper to have them build the platform.
I have that very same picture on a pinterest board for when we build our house. It's more likely to end up a dog bed than a reading corner!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

True. Hadn't thought of the dog bed aspect, haha!
Maybe a desk under the stairs would be more practical. No building required, just shove a desk under?
Just don't want it to be my cr*p accumulator area.Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010
