I normally freeze the slices of meat separately the day I get it then take out and make sarnies the next morning ... never thought of freezeing the sarnies already made ..
Thanks Guys

Frozen bread goes OK for me - frozen ham goes OK for me. dont ask me why but put the 2 together as sanis and between them there is this slimey thing that goes on when defrosted and bread seems to go soggy. Dunno why! :-) but if you can do it successfully - then cool :-)

Dogs have a better sense of smell than humans, so may be more likely to notice if something has gone off. Some pets also lick their own and/or others' behinds and so are probably more resilient to bugs like E coli than humans are. Also, remember that animals can suffer from food poisoning too. They are mammals after all.funny how folks think it is OK to give expired food to the dog.
I would expect cooked meat to be fine a day after its use by date if unopened, but probably wouldn't chance it if it's been open a few days.0 -
I think I would be more inclined to use it in something cooked so basically any bugs will be killed off. Perhaps mac and cheese with ham?

I would eat it too. How does the ham know it's Tue the 16th. It is just a precaution by the manufacturer (of course based on fact and science, I accept that but the dates are shorter then needed to protect themselves). I'd trust my nose and touch. If in doubt fry it (given of course it still smells ok and doesn't feel slimy etc). Who ever finishes a packet of ham on the day or after opening?
But for next time (I don't like frozen sarnies either, it's the bread, needs toasting then) freeze the ham right after buying in small portions or individually between cling film.finally tea total but in still in (more) debt (Oct 25 CC £1800, loan £6453, mortgage £59,924/158,000)0 -
This got mentioned on a tv programme I saw within last few months (Eat well for less?). I recall it because I sent a text telling an old workmate so, as she was once going to throw away a punnet of plums due to them 'going to be out of date tomorrow'Use by dates etc ALWAYS have a safety margin, that's why common sense where allowed by regulations can be used.
When it comes to meat, because I have a poor sense of smell, I stick to the '3 day rule' from opening.0 -
You could always cook the out of date ham if you're unsure. Make some soup or something. Frying or boiling will do in a few bugs - obviously if the meat is smelly in any way, bin it. But if it smells ok, then don't waste it.0
