Out of Date sliced ham

The sliced ham in my fridge went out of date yesterday and for some reason, I haven't eaten much of it.

Would it be okay if I made say four or five sandwiches out of it, froze them and then eat then throughout the week?

  • I'd say if it still looks and smells ok today that should be fine.

Throw it away.certainly do not freeze it after expiry. I am a retail butcher, trust me I understand this subject. It is unlikely if refrigerated properly, but you cannot taste nor smell a pathogen. Chuck it.

Thank you. Guess my dog is one lucky dog tonight then.

As I don't seem to be able to eat a packet of the ham that I like before it goes out of date, is my idea of making sandwiches and freezing them a good one, but just making sure the ham is in date before I do it?

I would still chance it and eat it (I'm a chancer!)

But that's just me I'm old school.. I believe you go on ya senses (smell, look, touch to judge best not on some scientist) if it smells ok and looks ok, eat it.

If it passes the sniff test I'd make sarnies and freeze them.

I'd eat it too, how can they be exact about the day it's going to go off and it's been refrigerated. Sorry dog!

It should be fine - smell it/taste it and decide for yourself.

I'm don't think foods alright up to the stroke of midnight and is then unusable. I'd freeze and get sarnies out the morning you're going to eat, if gotten out early enough they will have defrosted.
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

I told you what the situation is. If we were this cavalier at work we would be prosecuted. It is your choice. Also, remember that animals can suffer from food poisoning too. They are mammals after all.funny how folks think it is OK to give expired food to the dog.

And before anyone say s "we all eat a peck of dirt" etc. etc. Remember that it only takes 10 cells of e- coli 157 ( as an example) to cause total renal failure and death.Under ideal conditions ( for bacteria) cells can double their number every twenty seconds!

Just to sign off, almost ALL food poisoning occurs within the home because of poor food handling, and fridge management.

I usually do not worry about OOD food with the exception of meat. I have opened OOD ham before and found it to be 'slimy' - and flung it. And, from what you say, this is a partially used package.
In my experience the packaging usually warns that the food should be consumed before the expiration date.

I wouldn't risk it, personally. Even if it didn't smell 'off'.
