Advice - Received something I didn't order

Options
Hi

I just received a mobile phone in the mail. Problem? I didn't order it neither did anyone here. Address tag has it addressed to me. I don't know where this thing has come from or why is it delivered to me.

What should I do? No sender/return address on the package to contact.

If there is no sender address then you would have to open it and see i there is one inside.

You said it is addressed to you but does it have your actual name on it or just your address.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I opened it, that's how I know it's a phone. And no, there's nothing in there that leads me to who sent it.

Yes it's addressed to me. My name and address.

Put it in a cupboard/hand it to the police

Don't sell it, or use it, no normal phone company would send a phone with no information. It could well be stolen

Yeah it's in the cupboard. It's a used phone. I guess I'll give it a few days for whoever sent it to contact, if not, will hand to the police.
  • What make/model phone is it?

Does it have any visable branding? (O2/EE etc)
Did it come with a sim card, either in the package or inside the phone? If so, does this have any branding?

If anyone knocks on your door asking for it, don't hand it over. Could be a totally innocent mistake on behalf of a company or could have fraud all over it where someone comes to your door saying there has been a mix up with their order and they have come to collect the goods. Also the possibility someone has taken out a mobile contract with your details.

Edit - Just seen the above post that its a used phone. Is it an expensive one?
  • Have you made any recent purchases from ebay or similar sites?
If so, it's possible that the seller screwed up and simply printed out or copied the address of a previous customer.

What sort of value are you talking about for the phone in question?
If it's only a cheapie then I wouldn't worry too much about it being an attempt at a scam of some sort.

Have you got an eBay account? If so check there are no unknown purchases on there.

I'd reiterate p_R's comment, do not hand it over to anyone that turns up at your door.

It's a Samsung Galaxy S5. In decent condition but clearly used. No SIM card.

I bought a phone from eBay last month, an iPhone.

This phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 which sells for £150-170 on eBay right now.

Yeah I did. No unauthorized purchase. And thanks for the tip, I won't hand it over to anyone.

It wouldn't do any harm at the seller's recent history to see if they have sold an S5 just in case they did send it to you in error.
  • If you turn it on, has it already been wiped?

Might be worth doing the following:

    Touch Apps
    Touch Settings
    Scroll to About Device
    Touch Status
Scroll down and View Phone number

This was the number the phone was linked to. Always worth giving a quick call if the number is still there.
